I was wondering if the last 6 digits of the vin are supposed to match the last digits on the top line of the cowl tag. Mine don't match on my 69 Camaro SS and was wondering if someone changed the cowl tag.

The last 6 digits of the VIN will seldom if ever match the last 6 digits on the cowl tag, since the cowl tag was used at Fisher body for identification, and the VIN is the legal tag for the entire car.

Gary is right, the number on the cowl tag followed by "BDY" is the body sequence number. It will match a number on the build sheet, so the people on the line know what body they are starting to build, but will never match the VIN number, except possibly on car number 000001. There will be other pieces that match the VIN number however. One is the body itself, stamped on the cowl area under the cowl panel. Another is the engine and transmission. Rear ends do not have a VIN stamped on them.
