Hi all. My first post here (long time reader - first time poster). Thanks to all - I have learned lots here just by browsing the posts. I especially like the Tag Team area.

Anyway - long story short... I'm awaiting the arrival of my '69 SS/RS project car. By all accounts it is a real SS/RS however a previous owner has replaced the original engine with another 350 (3932388 casting# and stamped TO3031 HD). If I understand correctly this is a 255hp engine, not a 300hp (295hp) like the original. If so, what exactly differentiated these two engines to add the 40hp?

Thanks all - looking forward to posting more

Are you Chris from the chevelle site? Welcome abord!! As far as I know the diff's are heads and dist. And maybe the LM1 has a smaller fly wheel.

Heads.

L48 had 63 cc 3927186 camel humps with 1.94/1.50 valves.
LM1 has 73 cc 3932441 with 1.94/1.50 valves.

L48 has a higher compression ratio as a result.

Block, intake, exhaust manifolds, pistons, camshaft, and carb are all the same. Distributor has a different part number but I don't know how much difference that makes.

Wow - thanks guys. You sure know your stuff and I'm gonna enjoy learnin' from ya'll.

Still fastenates me all these numbers and combinations and just what the rational was back in those early production years.

Not sure what I'm gonna do. Will try and trace back through the owners to see if I can find out what happened to the original engine. It's an LA car so I'm hoping for a build sheet tucked away above that gas tank <prays quietly in the corner>.

BTW - I'm Gregg from San Diego

Gregg.

i thought the SS350 in 69 had 041's and the 250hp
had 441's and the 302 had 186's?
i know the 041 has the same CC chambers as 186's
and the 041 has a bigger intake runner.
