I own a 69 Z It has a non matching 302 but has many other correct things like 15 inch wheels correct dash etc. From what I have read the early cal Z's were not tagged that great. Any help?

Everyone uses the 15x7 Monte rims. Not sure what you mean by correct dash. Most Z's came with the no tach dash. So, neither of those are proof.

I know that 711 means standard black int.
and the 79 b is rally green, and that the car was built in LA. And that the engine did not come in the car.But from what I have read
the LA plates were sloppy and did not always ID Z28's. Any help would be great thanks.

69 LA tags don't have any model info on them (like all 68 tags), so you have to look at the car for clues.

Trans code (passenger side of the case)?
The rear axle # is stamped on the front side of the passenger axle tube and will tell us the original ratio and build date. It will take some cleaning to find it.

Does it have a plate welded to the driver's side rear frame rail with 2 holes in it? It is visible behind the rear tire if you are standing at the rear tire.

Single or dual fuel lines?

The plate he's talking about is the exhaust hanger. The Z28 will have a driver's side rear exhaust hanger welded on.

Hello Chris:

Just a couple of quick thoughts (I've just
returned from the bar, so please excuse
any lapses in reasoning). I seem to
remember that the wheels must have a 'YH'code for Z/28. It might be reasonable to check for all the stuff that would normally be present on a SS Camaro (after all, that's all that a Z28 is aside from the 302) i.e. 12 bolt, disk brakes, etc. Most Z28's have flat hoods (though most seem to have 'upgraded' since new) and are the only model aside from Pace cars and Z10 cars with stripes. I seem to remember that the higher performance cars (L78/L89/L72/Z28 etc) have a larger fuel line (and is something unlikely to have been changed by subsequent owners). An 8000 rpm tach would be nice. Front and rear spoilers were optional. It's a shame that Chevrolet was not as nice as Ford in providing engine codes in the VIN.

Hi there thanks for the response I have not had time to check much but I did see the plate on the left rear rail you speak of, will look tomorrow for other signs I am going spend a lot of time on this car over the winter, and just want to know what I am dealing with. If It was not a Z I was going to tubb it and big block it. The car is very very clean, I don't want to do another major project thats what got me into the trade,doing it all day It's like the mailman going for a walk on his day off. Thanks again. Chris

hi i own a 69 z28rs,

it's a van nuys car. it's a PERFECT example pf those funny los codes. http://www.69zee.homestead.com/enter.html i have my cowl and vin and things of such posted here. feel free to check them out. my engine was lacking a partial vin on the engine and i couldn't match it up so i hired jerry macneish a camaro expert who can verify and register matching number 302s, 427s, and 396s. if you need it i can probably get you his number and depending on where you live he would come out and verify if your car is real or not. he's very good with these van nuys. he matched mne up by matching the engine characters to the other car charaters. and matched the dates on the axels and tranny to the engine. proving it a real Z. email me if you would like some info.
