THANKS FOR THE INFO, BUY THE WAY THE VIN# MIGHT HELP OUT HUH.
VIN# 124378L347383 SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT WITH IT HAVING L34 IT WAS A 396 350HP WITH AUTOMATIC. The big reason for all this is that I purchased it with no motor or trans and I want to make it right. ------------------ |

I believe the "L" stands for Los Angeles. Your car was the 47,384th '68 to roll off the line. The first was #300,000. There were 10,000 that would have the "L34" in the vin including yours.

From the VIN, you can tell the car is a 2dr sport coupe and had a V8. You will have to look for other things if you want to determine what was the original motor.
Look at the CRG site, specially the 68 ID table (www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml) it will help you. ------------------ Chile ST-68 12437 ACC. |

Minor correction to DjD's post : the first car off the Van Nuys line was 300001. This would make your car the 47,383rd to roll off the assembly line. By the way, the VIN matches the build date of July. Your car was 1781 units from the last 68 to be built at Van Nuys. The last unit was 349164 or the 49,164th unit.

The 7th digit codes the assembly plant L=GM Assembly Division Los Angels and know as Van Nuys also which in the LA area. I know it was covered but in plain english the L34 in the VIN does not mean the engine. Prior to 1972 you could not tell what exact engine the car came equipped with except for the fact that if the 3rd digit in the VIN "4" in this case, was a odd number then it was a L6, even number then it was a V8. NO EXCEPTIONS, this only relates to the VIN which rules, the body tags all where coded V8 for simplicity in production, Fisher body routinely produced bodies long before the engine designation had been determined especially during model year startup.
