NOS almost impossible to find and expensive.

Purchased one off of Ebay listed as "SPEED MINDER Buzzer Relay 1967 Corvette Camaro 1969 1968 Chevelle 1969 1968" that I thought I could retrofit.

Using the Power Probe Hook, I attached the ground to the top terminal (-) and applied 12v to the bottom right terminal (+) and clearly heard the relay click. There was no audible buzz.

Should the buzz come from the relay itself or is that just the mechanism to activate a buzzer in the speedometer?

Greatly appreciate the help.

Humm The unit should look and feel a lot like the horn relay with the door buzzer sound. The "buzzer" - relay was and is common out there as a reproduction for vettes, and used since it was used on several GM lines and years so while NOS is rare, cheaper if you look for the Pontiac, Corvette versions of the 69. Same unit just double the price if the ad says Camaro. :)

I can't remember the actual three tabs but one is power - pink in color on the right maybe, Left is the trigger from the speedometer which is white and the other if I remember right is bottom and just holds the connector in place. Can you post a picture of what you have?

Here's the extract of UPC U15 from the 1969 AIM. Assume the cable marked '7' allow the speed at which the buzzer should sound to be adjusted and set by the driver. It looks like only 2 wires connected to the buzzer itself, so something from the U15-specific speedo has to trigger (ground?) the buzzer once the needle reaches the set warning speed:

ZLP955,

I believe you are correct. When the speedometer hits the speed dial setting the ground is triggered, completing the circuit, and the buzzer makes its' noise.

What I am trying to figure out is if #8 in your diagram is the actual noise making buzzer or just a relay that triggers a buzzer contained in the speedometer.

I purchased what turned out to be a relay and upon putting 12v on it with the apporpriate ground, i only hear the relay click and not buzz.

Which leads to my confusion, should #8 in your diagram be the actual buzzer or a relay that triggers a buzzer in the speedometer.

Well the AIM describes item 8 as a buzzer, so I think that's the only part that sounds the overspeed warning. The special speedometer for this option is required to trigger the alert, but don't believe there is any other difference from a standard speedo. I think if you use Brian's suggested bench test, you'll be able to determine if the buzzer operates as intended. If not, it may be worth sending the buzzer out to an instrument restoration/calibration specialist, probably an easy fix for a rare part.

Correct white wire connects to the speed warning needle on the speedo head. When the speedometer indicator runs past the speed warning pointer needle the circuit closes to ground and the buzzer sounds. So you can bench test with power to pink, ground to the unit housing, then ground the white lead and buzz.

Thanks to all for your help.

I now have an understanding of not only what the the buzzer is but also how it is supposed to work.

I have also found out how impossible it is to find. :)

I found one for a GM Oldsmobile / Buick that I think I can retrofit to work.

The good news is that it's only $35 so if it doesn't work it's not too hard on the old wallet.

JD - Mike - Actually OEM had three lugs, only two being wired - the bottom lug only being used to keep the two top lugs from being reversed on the harness connection.

Full setups are available at all the Corvette shops - or on eBay. Current eBay listings $49.99 for buzzer relay and harness - albeit incorrect wire colors, or $34.99 for just the relay. Slightly more for both at Corvette shops.

NOS Pontiac Firebird 69 module pic below. Different mount - same guts.

Jim - Hey so I went digging through the parts surplus box and I found a new unit I had marked a few years back as:
U15 Speed Minder for Chevelle/Impala/Corvette 69-70 Non-standard wiring! Requires two grounds.
Looks identical to the unit you bought on eBay and gives a click and will buzz when wired as so.
__ 2 __ 1
__ 3

Power to bottom lug #3. Ground to lug #2 - You should hear a click as the relay opens circuit on lug #1. At that point if you ground #1 - BUZZ.

My notes continued
"Told by Jack some 1970 full sized Chevrolet speedometers had a low set point lug (maybe 30 MPH) where the unit would not engage. After that low point relay closes to activate speed minder. Required three point harness. Needs research - Corvette."

Ok, did some research over the weekend. Hope this helps some other folks looking to add the Speed Warning (U15) option.

In the 1969 Camaro AIM (U15) it says to hook the buzzer up as follows:

___ 2 ___ 1
___ 3

Hook 12v (+) to Lug 2 and the Negative (-) from the speedometer to Lug 3.

That will work if you purchase this buzzer: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&vxp=mtr&item=321331652496

It is listed as a 1968 NOS 1968 OLDSMOBILE TORONADO IGNITION SWITCH WARNING BUZZER RELAY GM KEY BUZZER part # 1115866 and I tested it and it works in the car. If you can get one of these, I suggest you do as it is plug and play the way the AIM (U15) states.

If you purchase this buzzer:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/230933935462?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

You need to do some slight wire modifactions from the AIM (U15) instructions. With this buzzer, you need to hook the 12V (+) to Lug 1 rather than Lug 2 and the Negative (-) would still get hooked to Lug 3.

I have also tested this one in the car.

Hope this helps someone else out.
