Hi guys,
My 69 Camaro cowl tag shows a build date of 4L. Does anyone know what this might mean? I'm familiar with A,B,C,D codes, but hav never seen one like this. Does the L stand for Late? The CRG has not answered me yet, and I'm very curious to see if anyone might know. Its a Norwood car, X22 glacier blue, medium blue interior and 4 speed. Thanks, Bob |

Is it possible the L is really a lightly stamped D?
Ive heard folks talk about some stampings being off center or lighter on one side of the tag than the other, just a guess on my part tho. Whats the VIN? that would help narrow down the dates a little bit.

How about I answer here?
04L is some sort of anomaly and occurs in the VIN range of N636xxx-N637xxx. They are interspersed with 05A and even some 04C dates. What does it mean? It may mean nothing but after 30 years in manufacturing my guess it has some meaning-temporary process deviation or material substitution perhaps. Our small db has over 30 04L datapoints. I've seen body tag errors but not to this extent. There are too many for this to have been an error. |

I have heard the the 4L cars where made during the GM strike. Non-union workers mistook the "L" for "E" (last week). The mistake wasn't caught until the next month production run back to the first week.

No GM strike at Norwood during April of 69, it was LA that had the strike from 4/27 to 6/19. The 4L codes are unique to Norwood cars.

More then likely just a screw up by the person doing the stamping. Might have been someone new on the job.
It seems it was a mistake and should have been 04D. Bad eye's, might have looked like a D to the person loading the addressograph for that weeks work. |
