Hello,
First, this is a great site!!! I am a mid thirties guy whose wife claims is going through a mid life crisis . I had a 69 camaro in high school, reg 8cyl x-11 code with a 307 and hurst 3 speed manual in the console. It was an awesome first car, and as many others, I regret selling it. Anyway, I have recently bought two 1969's to restore. One, for an original show, and one to drive on weekends. Camaro number 1, (which is in great shape, unrestored, runs and has decent paint ((weekend driver)) ) has no x codes (late 68 build date). It has stock: a 12 bolt posi rear, console 4 speed with gauges, center dash clock, deluxe interior, multi leaf springs, # matching 350 (and tranny), but no disk brakes (drum). It was sold to me as a regular camaro. At some time in the past, all emblems were removed, and this original hugger orange car was painted black, no chrome anywhere on the outside for that "sleek" look. The same person has owned this car for over 20 years and cannot remember what emblems were removed from the car.
Trim Tag: ST69 12437 NOR 110311, TR 711, 72/72 PNT, 09D. Any info would be helpful. (Cowl tag and pictures are still on ebay, item number: 2417414060)
OK, second car I may have been taken. It was sold as an "SS" rolling chassis, no engine or tranny. Has the ss emblems, and is an X-11 car.
Turns out when I had it shipped, it was stripped of every piece of chrome (xcpt ss emblems), all handles, headlight buckets and everything that was removable. It has a 10 bold rearend and mono shocks. It was supposed to have been a 350/auto with air car. Additionally, it also had drum brakes and a 3/8 inch fuel line. I had understood that the SS option always came with disk brakes? It does have the rear glass with factory defogger. The taillight panel is painted black, but upon closer inspection, it looks like it was done (poorly) with a can of black paint (and they could not even stay within the lines!). I am getting conflicting info on the black panel. Some say only on big block cars, others say that with the style trim group (x-11) and SS it could have been painted black. Trim Tag-ST69 12437 NOR291591BD, TR718, 52/52 PNT 03D X11. It does seem to be a red on red car which is cool, but not $2250.00 cool for a stripped rolling chassis!
I remember some site somewhere that said something about a tag on the frame under the car for SS (or maybe that was for a Z)? Does anyone have any information on this? The "regular" camaro seems to have many more options than the supposed "SS".

Thanks for any information or help on this, I do not want to put the money in the "SS" if it was just a 8 cyl camaro.

Richard

On the First Car Manual Drum Brakes would usually Rule it out as being an SS, Also there should be a welded plate behind the Drivers side rear wheel for the Drivers side tail pipe hanger, 1 or 2 Fuel lines ( an SS would have had a return line ). If it's a #'s matching 350/300 Post the Engine suffix code here that's stamped on the Passenger side pad infront of the head and that can be decoded also to tell you exactly what Motor you have.

Car 2 Drum Brakes again , Yes Big Block cars had the Tail panel Blacked out with exception to a few Colors, But a Big block car would not have been an X11 Code it would have been X22 or X66. X11 cars were Non Big Block, Non Z/28, They did include SS350's with style trim. Again look for signs that SS cars had.

First car sounds like an LM1. The codes from the engine, trans, and axle will confirm that. Post what you find. Look under 'Decoding' on the CRG site for the locations.

Second one was a 307 or 350/250hp car, assuming it was a V8. It wasn't an SS. Main 2 things you don't have that most 69 SS's should have is discs and a 12 bolt. You can add them if you're gonna modify it anyway.......

RE: LM1
RE: Are these cars from Texas?

The 4 speed is from New York, but yes the red car is a stripped car that I just bought in Paris Texas. The guy swears it is a ss, but cannot explain the drum brakes.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what is an LM1?

LM1 was the engine designation for the 350 255 hp engine. Engine codes are HQ-manual trans, HR-powerglide, HS-TH350. Look at the pad under alternator and tells us the code. The LM1 engine was only orderable until around Jan 69, so a non X coded car could be a LM1. Ordering an LM1 with TH350 or 4-speed would have upgraded the rear to a 12-bolt, but the disc brakes were optional.

More info:

and here:

Find all the component numbers and post them for decoding.

Kevin got it right, but I'll say it differently.

The LM1 got all the drivetrain features of the SS50 except the disc brakes, which were optional.(And of course a little lower hp engine.)

Does it have the brake valve under the driver's door, bolted to the subframe?

Let us know what you find on the codes.

Angry

Engine Code: N513945I09I7HQ
(1)(1) (the I's could be 1's)
(I orininally thought the "Q" was an "O", designated a 300hp car).

Still need to get the tranny and rear codes.

"Does it have the brake valve under the driver's door, bolted to the subframe"

Yes it does have the brake valve under the drivers door. It also has all of the original smog equipment, pipes into the exhaust manifolds and a working smog pump. It has a large AC style fuel filter with three lines in it. The top of the air cleaner was painted red, and when I started cleaning it off I discovered that it is chrome underneath, which is cool.

Neither car had a tag by the drivers rear exhaust hanger. Now I have to decide weather to insist on my money back, or make a red/red CoPo Clone (or as I've seen here, a "tribute" car).

Thanks again,

Rich
