Is there an easy way to identify an original Cowl Air Cleaner and not purchase a reproduction by mistake? Thank You for the help, Jim

Kevin, I didn't want to disrupt the earths balance. I was only asking because I didn't want to buy a GM and be told later that I purchased a reproduction. I promise I want tell anyone the secret. Jim

Heck I'll tell everyone.I didnt realize that it was suposed to be a secret.
The original ZL-2 air cleaners are flat on the bottom where the the filter sits. If you turn it over and look at the bottom its flat. Repo air cleaners have a groove in the bottom where the filter sits. Also original air cleaners have a definit flare on the sporkel were it attachs to the base. Repos only have a hint of this.
I hope this helps,
Nick

Nick, I gotta go catch that cat now!

Nick is correct, original ones are flat on the bottom. GM service replacements and Chevelles from 1970 on and repros have the groove.

The valve cover breather tube on Z/28s and SS350s is 3/4" dia and has one 90 deg. bend. Repros have two 45 deg bends.

I'm pretty sure the SS396 and COPOs have a 1" dia breather tube and one 90 deg bend.

SS396 and SS350's (and Pace Cars) with Auto trans have the vacuum flap on the snout. Quite rare and not repro-ed.

The area around the carb, is smoother on the repros, I'm pretty sure. GMs have a lot of wrinkles in this area.

Hope that helps!

I hope none of you guys are going to the same swap meets as I and get that original $50 air cleaner before me!
