I am looking for anyone who could help in decoding the following numbers from my 1967 Camaro Convertible. I am the second owner, and have the original Bill of Sale. But things do not seem to match the books I have referenced. Here it goes.
VIN: 124677N217903
Engine: 18K234030 V06I9
Data Plate:

ST 67-12467NOR117932 BODY
TR 760-Z A-1 PAINT

I bought it from the original owner and it currently has 122276.9 miles on it. I believe that the miles are original since I drove the car from Upstate New York to Indy and burned NO OIL! How can I verify if the motor is truely original? I could not find a VIN on it.

The car invoice shows the following:

Are there codes hidden somewhere in the Data Plate that I can break down to verify Engine information, Color, etc. Or is this as good as it gets? Anything you can provide would be of great assistance.

what I can tell you...
engine is not original...the VIN is 18K234030, this is from a '68 Chevelle, assembled in Kansas City.
Your car has standard black bucket seat interior, is Tuxedo Black with a white top, and most likely came with a 327 2bbl engine, 210 horsepower.
Options...Power top, center console, and Z21 style trim group, which included the chrome/stainless trim, on wheel openings, and I believe the rockers and doors.
Sounds like a nice little car!

Sure you found the VIN on the motor but not the one you wanted to find. Its the 18K234030 and as Dave said its not original. You missed two more digits after V06I9?? on the engine, its the application suffix. We can tell what the engine is, i.e. 307, 350 etc.

Heres the breakdown of the VIN code for your infomation.

1=Chevrolet Division (2=Pontiac; 3=Olds, 4=Buick; 5=GMC; 6=Cadillac; 7=GM of Canada)
8=Model year 1968
K=Kansas City (Leeds)Plant
234030=Last 6 digits from the car that had this engine originally.

No Camaros were ever built as the KC Facility.

Your car was built in Norwood Ohio.

Got time to help another? 10L129501 T10CRE are the numbers on my SB. From what you have posted 1970 Chevrolet. What plant is "L"? as for the second set of numbers I only found the 6 numbers shown. Could this indicate a crate motor? If so where did the 6 after "10L" come from. Tom it sounds like you have a great car. Hope you don't mind me throwing my questions out here!

10L129501 T10CRE

Ok, these are 2 distinct codes here. The first one 10L129501 is the vehicle VIN code and the other T10CRE engine application code. The VIN code was put there on the assembly line for the car and the application code was put there by the engine plant.

10L129501 decodes like this;
1=Chevrolet Division
0=Model Year=1970
L=Los Angeles for all the VIN's [On the cowl tag would be "LOS" for 67-70 Camaro and "L" 71 and later, "BL" for Chevelle and "VN" for El Camino, since I don't know what car you have I tossed in the extra bit of info]
129501=Last 6 digits of the car vin, if they match, you have a matching numbers original engine. Note-They are not supposed to match the body number on the cowl tag.

T10CRE is the engine application code
T=Tonawanda NY engine plant
10=It is not complete here, there should be 4 digits here, MMDD (month and day) so we don't know if this is the month, day or part of both. Remember now this was done by hand and mistakes were possible as this would indicate.
CRE=1970 Chevelle/El Camino/Camaro/Nova 350-300hp, TH350 Trans, RPO L48, 4bbl Carb

All we rule out is the Nova as the source for this engine, the Chevelle and Camaro were being assembled at the Los Angeles plant during this time frame but the Nova did not come on line at LA till 1972.

Its a transplant into my '69RS convertible. The guy that started the project mentioned the motor came out of an El Camino.

I may be wrong...but I believe "VN" was also used on the cowl tags of camaros. My trim tag reads 12437 VN xxxxxx.

After quite a bit of scrubbing with Brown and then red Scotch-brite the motor block provided the following:

18K234030 V06I95A -or- V06I9SA

The stamping is very light and difficult to read. Is this a 327 or something else?

I think you need to look again, the engine suffix does not match the VIN year 1968-see below.

No such code as 5A

We know from the VIN code is this is a 68 Chevelle engine and the only engines were 327 or 307 possible. Assuming the A in the suffix is correct, the only possible small blocks are listed below.

1968 Chevelle 307
DA=Manual Trans

1968 Chevelle 327
EA=Manual Trans

mccory- Some earlier Camaros used a VN for Van Nuys plant, but this was changed to LOS at some time. I think Kurt S could tell us when this took place.

My car is a bit of a paradox, anyhow...it is a Protect-o-plate LA car...with some funky numbers....

Re: VN on trim tags

LA stamped LOS on 67-69 trim tags up to mid-December of 68 when they started stamping VN on the tags. So, early 69 LA cars have LOS and later 69 cars have the VN.
