Question

I have the rear end out of my 69 Z/28 to do a disc brake conversion.I've read Jerry Mac Neish's book and have found the ratio code on the axle tube.Is the VIN stamped anywhere on the rear? The unit is very rusty and the cast center section is all flaky,I don't know how much detail will be left in the date code,so I'd like to find a VIN stamp,if there is one.

The VIN is not stamped on the rear. Best match to the car is date code.

The assembly code is stamped on the passenger side axle tube, about 4" out from the point hthe tube enters the center differential. Its on the front upper quadrant of the tube and will be 2 letters, 4 numbers, then a single letter, possibly followed by a single number 1,2 or 3. If it is a posi it will have a second row of at least one letter below the first.
