I have a friend who just bought a 72 Trans Am. He is rebuilding the front suspension and needs new front springs. He has called a couple of places and they all want outrageous prices for "Pontiac" springs.
My question is, are there any F-body enthusiasts out there of the Pontiac persuasion that would know the weight of a Pontiac 455 big block? I am thinking that if the weight is similar to a Chevy big block, he could order Camaro springs and save about $75. |

If no one knows then go into the Trans Am webring. I am sure its in there and maybe even find a good deal on springs

I looked on the Pontiac webring. Couldn't find anything as well organized as camaros.net.
Just a bunch of links to other people's personal websites with information about their projects. |

Oh sure... De-face perfectly good Chivvy springs by stuffing them in a Poncho... Eaacchhh.. Just kidding, nobody is jumping on this one, so I'll take a swag. See what the spring height on the Pontiac springs is, on new ones if possible. The other thing to look at is # of turns, and spring diameter. If all of these are the same or very close, the only remaining difference would be the actual spring rate. As you observed I think that these would probably be close to that of a BB Camaro. I would be careful though, some of those Trans Am's got pretty porky.

I did some checking for you. For the 72 Pontiac 455,
w/air, part # scs5402s (McQuay Norris) $76.99 that may be each w/o air, # scs5376s (McQuay Norris) $83.99 " " For the big block Camaro they do not list any parts from McQuay Norris. All we list is Moog parts W/ air #5376 w/o air #5384 both list for $93.99 Prices are for Checker Auto in Great Falls Montana. Different part numbers, who is to say they would not work. I am pretty sure the control arms are the same. I would stick with the facts. If you have a 72 TA with a 455, I would stay with that, just to be safe. |
