Mike,
That block could be a 302, 327, or a 350. You need the stamped numbers of the pad on the front of the block to know what it is. No way to tell if it is 2 bolt or 4 bolt other than to pull the pan and look.

Thanks, i am saying It is a four bolt main! I was told that 327's did not come with 4 bolt mains. The block has been decked, shaved or what ever the correct saying is, so I don't have the numbers on the front pad.So I just don't see how someone can claim it is a 327 when they sold it to me!

Mike, I would not jump the gun and get rid of the 3970010 block so fast. Once it is pulled, tear it down and investigate. That shouldn’t take long. Many of us would rather have a 4 bolt main block over a 2 bolt any day. Even though 2 bolt main blocks can handle quite a bit of power themselves. It’s a Macho thang!
Ok, so it has been decked and the # pad is clean now. Ordering a crate motor tells me that you aren’t too concerned with a # matching Camaro. Or weather it’s a 327 or 350cid. Has it been bored out? If so how much? There may be some sort of info on the piston that may help with that answer. If you tear it down, a good machine shop could tell you a lot about that motor pretty quick. Who knows, you may even have a steel crank in the bottom end. It may even be cheaper to rebuild it up to the 420HP level by reconditioning and reusing existing parts, over buying a new crate motor. Or better yet, Keep it and build up a Stroker Motor. Just my 2 cents input tonight. Kurt

Man that must be a GOOD friend to give a 010 motor too,, i would do as Kurt said pull a head and measure the bore and stroke,,look at crank see if its steal,,010 bare blocks around here go for around 350 to 500 bucks ,,Frank

Mike:
You can look at the Crankshaft end flange and probably tell what flavor you have... 'Kinda' round with little 'cheeks' on the sides and notched bottom edges is a 327. Squared sides, rounded top and notches in the bottom is a 350. Hope this is some help. ps: If it's a large journal crank with a round flange and a notch out of it in just one place, you're going to be getting some calls...

Mike can I be your friend too!! That casting number is what to look for when block hunting! If your friend does take it apart I would be very curious as to what it is. Like previously said, that would be a good start for a strong stroker motor.
I am currently driving a 1977 GMC pick up truck that came stock with the non smog 350 4 bbl motor. This motor has never been apart or rebuilt and only has a little over 100,000 miles on it. It doesn't use any oil and is solid as a rock. The GVWR on this truck is 6050 so that also tells me it never had any smog components on it. It also tells me the engine is more than likely a 4 bolt main engine. And, when I find another car to build that engine is coming out of the truck and going to the machine shop. That will be my 383 soon!

Thanks for the replyes.Just got home from manditory fire fighting and hazmat..The moter does run,I just don't beleave it is a 327,like I was led to beleave. My plan is to go through it in the near future and finally learn!Yes at age 47. I know the engine that i am going to get is costing me about 800.00 more than the zz4,But i have waited so lone to have a camaro again. And I have not regretted spending one dime on the car the last fue years... I beleave the car has a 350 in it,not A 327.Not a junk but very tired. It is a good start to the joy I have and that is CAMAROS.I will rebuild it! So when I do I will be here asking all kinds of questions. Thanks again, and thanks Team Camaro!!

The little 350 (010 block) in my '77 Chevy 4x4 only went 317,000(+) before a stalagtite or something broke off in it as I was slamming through the gears up an offramp several years ago. Drove it all the way back to the shop and then plunked a new crate motor in it... It was still on the original clutch too - I don't downshift to often, brakes are way cheaper and easier to install than 12" clutches... You're right about the -010 blocks being good starting points for a build-up - but, the heads are presently keeping the back end of our boat from drifting ps: hows your G-ma doing?

Vintage 68,
Thanks for asking! My G-ma is doing WONDERFUL! The new hip replacement has worked out great and she went to the doctor last week to see when she could have the other one done. She has gone from creaping around the house with a walker to going outside almost everyday and sweeping her front walk. It is just SO amazing how they could make her life so much better. She can't hardly wait to get the other one replaced now!! Oh, and my old '77, I just love this old truck but the rust has taken it over. The floor boards are gone and when it rains you get wet. I had to stop at the gas station last night to clean the water spots off the INSIDE of my windshield. This is also my wood hauler and if I take it off the road I will have to use my wife's truck for that. I'll just keep driving it until the cab falls off. LOL
