What do you folks think are the best type of rings to use for dirt track racing?
I figured cast iron seats fairly fast, are cheap, and can easily last the season. Moly: good sealing characteristics, fast seating with smooth cylinder finish, (low engine temps with less friction), but prone to dirt and detonation damage. Chrome: excellent wear, damage resistance, but very slow seating. Larry |

Almost all offroad engines (dirt Sand ect) use crome rings. Moly is prone to dirt and cast will last longer than moly and with both they can retain dirt and score the cylinder walls. If your worried about sealing make sure your builder gaps them right and the bore is strait and the ring groove gaps are OK. Pay attention to detail and you will not have the problems that many people do when using performance parts of any type.

We use moly rings on all the motors we build and have had no problems what so ever. We make sure our guys use a good air cleaner anyway, so dirt really is not a problem. We just finished tearing down one street stock 355 Chevy for a freshen up. It is on its 4th season, over 200 races with just a quick rering and bearing job each winter. It still looks like new, no wear on the cylinders etc. Speed Pro Moly rings every time. It does look like the cam is starting to go away this time so it will get replaced but thats it ! The customer is absolutely meticulous as far as air filter maintainence and oil and filter change (Mobil 1) every other race. This is on a 3/8 mile dirt track.
