Hey guys,
I'm going to be pulling the engine (1972 vintage 350) to replace the rear main seal in my 67 over Christmas break here and need some advice on what kind of rear main seal I should get. I had the engine out of the car 4 years ago to replace some leaky gaskets and do a cam swap and decided to just do a preventative replacement of the rear main seal (it was simply beginning to seep at the time). After getting everything back together, the rear main seal started leaking in about 2 months. I was pissed, but just let it go. I drive the car daily (it's my only car) and the leak has gotten to the point now that it sprays about a quart of oil a week on the bottom of the car. When I replaced the seal, I used a Mr. Gasket polyacrylate seal. I think I'm going to use a Fel-pro seal this time, but they have two kinds - polyacrylate and silicone. Which one should I use - keep in mind that I drive my car daily. Also, any tips on installation or reassembly that will keep this leak from coming back anytime soon? Also, what's the best, leak-free oil pan gasket out there? Thanks for the help!! ![]() ------------------ Justin Traunero justin.traunero@furman.edu -1967 Camaro SS350 clone My 1967 Camaro |

Personally, I'd go with Fel-Pro.
**** the seal halves about 5-10 degs, so the part line doesn't line up with the cap. Make sure the lip points to the inside, use lacquer thinner to clean the oil pan rail and the mating surface. Take some RTV and place a small bead, >1/16 in. dia., from the seal to the oil pan rail before mounting the bearing cap. This will seal the cap. Use same bead of RTV and paste gasket to the block. Apply RTV to pan, install pan. I always use GM gaskets, no problem, sometimes, even dry, and they still work. ------------------ Everett 68/350/PG/11.90/115mph |

So, would I be better off going with a GM rear main seal and oil pan gaskets?

Justin,
Wish I had some advice for you. I guess you know this is a good opportunity for a stall converter. Not to radical of course. Good Luck. ------------------ Robert '69 getting better every day... (every pay day) |
