I have a 67 camaro with a HP 350 motor and a Turbo 350 with a tci stall of 2400-2800, I have a friend who just bought a 69 camaro with a manuel 4 speed and he wants to trade becuse he dosen't like manuel tranny's my question, is it worth it and how do I know what kind of tranny is in the car and would it be better on gas then my 3 speed auto? Also if you where in my situation would you trade it?

Any info would be great

If it's a muncie 4-speed (probably is) the link below will show you how to identify it. I prefer shifting gears over an automatic unless I'm gonna be driving in heavy traffic, but that's me. You have to ask yourself, "What do I want".

Nothing like running through the gears with a Muncie 4-speed, I'd say go for it. Value wise, I'd say GENERALLY speaking, the 4 speeds are bringing a little more money than the automatics........KZ

Yes, I would. It would increase the value of your car and, most importantly, it would make it much more fun to drive. Changing to a four speed is one of the best changes that I have made to my car.

For consistancy when racing go auto, for all out fun on the street go manual. For a lot of stop and go traffic daily... your call.

what are the relative conditions of the two cars? Sounds like you may have a new trans and converter as well as a new motor. Is his car all original and will you need to fix the same things on that car that you've already fixed on yours? I would say see how much work each needs and judge from there.

My motor is New and so is the tranny and the tranny also has a stage 2 shift kit. My camaro has been completly redone but not stock more like a pro-touring look with the big wheels and shaved body.

His camaro is a 69 daily driver project he wants to trade tranny's straight across.
He is also going to give me the pedals linkage clutch bellhousing everything

I was wondering if there is anyway of knowing if it's a muncie and also how can I tell how much longer it's going to last and can I keep my driveline thats on the car now or do I have to get rid of it?

THANKS

Personally I like automatics, but 4-speeds are a lot of fun.You need to drive the car and make sure the 4-speed runs quietly, dont jump out of gear ,and that sort of thing.Check the shifter,is it still tight or does it wobble and rattle? Then you will probally want to replace the clutch set-up when you have it out,and dont forget the pilot bushing in the crankshaft.Crawl under the car and look at the flywheel also.If the stuff is O.K. go for it,if not,it could run into a nice chunk of pocket change before you are done.

i can only think of 2 reasons to have an automatic in a performance car...
1) it is too much work to push in a clutch, put it into gear, talk on the cell phone, comb your hair, and tune in Radio Free Europe on the radio all at the same time..
2) you are handicapped and need the hand controls.

the first one is an excuse, and not a good reason, like the second one is.
a "pro-touring" type car just NEEDS a stick, and ALL race cars should have an H pattern shifter, you know, to put the driver back into the equation.
the preceeding were just MY opinions, and not a personal attack on anyone, anywhere.
anyone know how to rig up a clutch linkage in a 94 Caprice? that way, my daily beater can be cool like i need it to be.

How many 4 speeds are there or is it just the muncie?

Also can I keep my driveshaft,I just got that done last week and would hate to get rid of it? One more thing My camaro was originally a stick changed to an auto and now maybe going back to stick, does that change anything?

THanks

If you have a short shaft TH350, then your crossmember and new drive shaft will bolt right in to the four speed. It did on mine.

As far as I know there are 2 manual 4spds availible (muncie and saginaw) On inspection the saginaw can be identified by a cast iron main case. The muncie is aluminum (sp?). I'm not sure how easy this is to determine but with my old saginaw (crapinaw as I call it), it was very black (under the grease) and the new muncie is more shinny as is to be expected.
for munice identification numbers goto www.muncie4speeds.com
Also, make sure that if you do decide to swap, you get the 67+ year muncie cause it is stronger.
my opinion, 4sp!!! Of course i'm only 22 though so go figure...

Thumbs up for the manual trans. My 81 camaro with a built 350 and 4 speed got the same gas mileage(sometimes better) as my 79 camaro that had a bone stock 350 and auto trans. Ive noticed on ebay that the Borg warner Super T10 trans sells cheaper than the muncies and IMO its a better trans.

Ive had a muncie and now I have a super T10, the T10s case looks stronger and they have better ratios available. The muncies are cool but if given the choice I would always choose the ST10 over one(except M22 rockcrusher).

Manual trans is sooo fun, I will never go back to auto. Now if I can just save up enough for a new jericho 4 speed or a T56 Ill have it made. You can also go bigger with your camshaft and not have to worry about getting a bigger stall for an auto. I see many advantages to having a manual trans, its good stuff.

"crapinaw" lol, good one JefeOsterhead. Actually, I beat the **** out of a saginaw behind my 350 and it took every bit of it, but yeah, still crap. Im 22 also by the way(still think im 18).
