hello all, haven't been around much in this forum lately, nor has my camaro been receiving much attention. Anyway, the current TH350 in it I think is on its last legs. The owner previous was very hard on this tranny and I'm lookin to upgrade to a new, stronger one. The original 327 in it now (only the bottom end is orig.) had a recent top end upgrade which I think contributed to the already worn tranny going out quicker.

I would like to know what is a good tranny to go to, considering in the future this car may see a fresh 355 or 350 in it? A Th-400? Which exact one? The rear end in my car is stock 10 bolt but will see eaton posi at some point.

thanks anyone for suggestions....

why stick with an auto? a stick is soooo much more fun. T56 from a newer Camaro or Trans Am with double overdrive for fuel economy seems to be the trick swap these days. and these teannies are supposedly damn near bulletproff.

If you really really really want to stick with an automatic, I'm pretty confident that a TH350 will suit you just fine with a 350 or 355. A TH400 will do fine as well, but probably not necessary and would cost quite a bit more (from what I've read) and if I'm not mistaking, weighs a bit more and consumes more HP than a TH350. I personally agree with novaderrik and would go with a manual tranny, but everyone's different and has different uses for their car....

A TH350 should hold up just fine. Hold on to your old one if you can - TH350 cores are getting hard to find. The junkyards sold them off years ago around here and the tranny rebuilders scarfed them all up.

You could also drop in a 200-4R OD trans too. They are a pretty straight forward swap when replacing a TH350 (there are a few changes - but size-wise they are very similar). Bruce (screen name WE4 here at Camaros.net) at Performance Transmissions is probably the best 200-4R builder around and he is right there in California. He can also do a good TH350 for a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Is the 200r4 good with around 375 HP or so for when I put a new motor in? Also, if I did decide to go manual, which is a good way to go? that T56?

thanks

You can get the 200 tranny to handle upwards to 600/800hp if you have the money.

Check out WE4 here, (Bruce), as well as the original Art Carr, not the company now using his name... I bet either can fix you up with a VERY good 200 tranny... pdq67

Go with the T-56 and get away from the slush boxes. I beat the snot out of the 6 Speed in the 93 Z. It has 95,000 miles on it and the tranny shows no sign of wear. I think that they are darn near bulletproof. If you insist on sticking with an auto, go with a 700r4.

Thanks for being so helpful guys. Just one last thing. Where might I expect to buy a T-56 from and how much might I expect to spend if I had someone do the auto to manual T-56 swap?

That guy you speak of sounds like a great referral. I'll see where he is in CA.

Hey Leftcoast,

How's it going? I've been gathering up the parts for my PG to TH350 swap, so I'm pretty much committed to a TH350 now.

However, if I were going to put in any other automatic tranny besides the TH350, I think I would go with the 200R4 because:

1. It's an overdrive tranny with good gear ratios.
2. It's a direct bolt in from a TH350 (you only have to get a TH400 crossmember).
3. It is a reasonably tough tranny that can handle a lot of HP as PDQ67 said.

If I were going to a manual, I would want at least a 5 speed or the T56 six speed. (Don't know how much surgury is required to install one).

Good luck & let us know what you decide.

Regards,
Mark P.

Like Grannys69 said the 200-4R is an easier fit. Keep in mind that the 200-4R has been raced by the Buick GN crowd for years and they have all the bugs worked out of building them.

Last time I saw a major discussion on building the 700-R4 there was a prob with the 3-4 clutches and line pressure that is inherent to the design of the tranny - in other words, no one has figured how to fix it yet so it will handle any serious HP. Although I will admit that a 700-R4 in stock form is probably strong enough to handle your current engine combo. Either tranny should work fine.

Hello granny,

I haven't been around this forum for a while. Good to hear from you. I'm really torn on what to do. I can't get a good idea how much I would expect to spend on the labor for the install of the 200-r4 versus going manual to a T-56. I do bolt on stuff, electrical, and maintenance but I'm not going to touch a tranny swap unless with someone that has experience.

Granny, would you be interested in anything on my TH350 that is in there currently? I don't know what I'll do with it, nor do I know how wasted it is.

Leftcoast,

Sorry to hear that your TH350 is toast. I'm in the same boat with my old sickly Powerglide. I've got a TH350 tranny that I will have re-built or use as an exchange core. Still trying to get quotes from local trans. builders before I shell out my money.

Otherwise, I've gathered up almost everything I need for the PG to TH350 swap except for a good Shift kit and a drainable TH350 tranny pan.

The only thing I'm not sure about is how the kickdown cable setup is going to work with my current 2bbl. carb. I won a k-down cable & bracket on e-bay,but the bracket looks like it is for a 4bbl. setup (Which I plan to install in the future).

So have you decided what tranny to go with yet? If you are going to pull your TH350, I would be interested in a couple of items.

Let me know what you decide. BTW, other than your tranny problem, how is your 327 running since upgrade?

Regards,
Mark P.
