Question

I'm doing a total overhaul on a 69 camaro. For the engine I have bought the ZZ-502,502 with 567lbs. of torque. The specs are:
502hp. at 5200 rpm.
567lbs. of torque at 4200 rpm.
9.6-1 comp.
Camshaft is a Hydraulic Roller.
Cam. lift .527" Intake, .544" Exhaust
Cam. Dur. 224*-Intake, 234*- Exhaust
Intake valves-2.25" Stainless
Exhaust valves-1.88" Stainless
For the rearend I have bought a Ford 9" with 370 gears from Currie in California.
My question is what would you recomend for a transmission and converter for this aplication. I called Jim Pace in Ohio and they recomend buying a Hughes Turbo-400
with a 2500 stallspeed converter.
Looking for more info. Thanks.

I have the 502/502 in my street truck, I installed one as soon as the engine hit the market. I have a friend who owns an AAMCO transmission franchise. He is also big into High Performance applications. As crazy as it sounds he built a 700R4 for my truck. I have had no problems with the trans whatsoever. He is very maticulous, and did a fantastic job. My truck weighs 4,200 lbs with me in it and a 1/2 a tank of fuel in street form. I am running a Precision Industries 2100 stall converter. Precision will correct the stall for you one time for no charge if needed. My engine is in stock trim except for the 850 street demon carb. The Holley was not consistent, as others have found, when this engine is installed in a heavier vehicle. I dealt with Kevin fron Jim Pace Pontiac throughout the project, he is very good to work with. I swapped the waterpump for one that turned the opposite direction, so I could run a serpentine belt setup. My truck is fairly quick for just utilizing the crate motor in stock form. My truck looks like a sunday driver and is very plush inside. I pull mid 12's consistently on drag radials. Not bad for 3:42 gears. Because of the monstorous torque of the engine it gives me an added benefit of top end speed. I manually lock in the torque converter right after my launch, this makes for accurate and extremely firm shifts. I have raced many vehicles on back roads also. The best part is when you kick these mustangs in the quarter with such a heavy truck, and then you kill them on top end. My truck hits overdrive at 125 (Keeps right on pullin'), and I have had it to 140+ (Gets there without a problem). I could not run any tires but the drag radials, It would break traction without hardly steppin' on the gas. My wife can take the truck to the store or take it to work, very dependable vehicle.
I can't imagine having this same combination in a camaro, that would be kinda' scarry. Have fun!

The 400 is probabily the best bet but I don't think you will need any where near that much gear in the car. I don't know just how much converter you will need it depends on the idle and low speed characteristics of the combo but I would use the lowest you can get away with or you are going to invest a lot of money in tires.

No advise, Just comment. I thought you already had a TH400 (was it Hughes?) Anyway, with all that torque I can suggest a trans from Peterbilt or Kenworth.

i do not think a camaro can suport the weight or size of a T-10 roadranger 10 speed dual range manual tranny. have you seen one? or better yet tried to lift one! by the by i build kenworth truck's! the best truck in the world! we put up too a 600horse motor with over 1200 foot pound's of tourq in these bad boy's. and most have 3.73 to 4.50 gear's in the rear end's. just so you know a T-10 raodranger is a cast iron case tranny about the size of a 502BB. it is made by eaton corp. the clutch is very heavey too. infact you need to use a hoist cause it will kill you lift it and mount it. most are a ceramic disk type clutch.

i bet a Art Carr modified 200R4 would love your set up mobiltool's! and the 1st to 2nd gear jump is very nice. i have heard of a lot of BB car's with tis tranny and they seem to last very well. beside's we all know that a buik GN is one fast car! and this is the tranny that they use. they work well in a light car. like a camaro. i would use a 2000 to 2500RPM stall converter. but i bet Art carr tranny's can give you the best recomendation.

here is there web site. http://www.artcarr.com/

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replys. I started getting gray hairs here waiting. Only kidding.

ZZ-Truck, I hear you about the power. I went with the Hughes T-400 with the 2500 Stall.
Power, Power and more Power. It just goes!! You know that. The car weights just over 3500 lbs. I have the A/C set up also.
I bought the motor fully assembled and it came with the Holley 850 d/p carb. I went with the March Serpt. system, their A/C comp. and Alt.
I just had a full custom interior done and the new rims came in last week. It's not scarry for me driving the car but the looks on the passengers faces is Priceless!

Yes you are right Oger. The tires do go fast. I have the 275/60/15 BFG Drag radials. I bought 6 rims, 2 for the extra pair of BFG's.

Rojo, I did contact Peterbilt and Kenworth and they both said the same things. That some minor modifications would be needed but it could be done. Some thing about the trans. hump would need to be removed.

I've had the car on the road since last Sept. and it's been one hell of a blast.
I'm just doing the finishing touches on the car now and it'll be finished in the next 2 weeks.
No more buying parts just tires.

ZZ Truck I would be interested in the building of the 700R4. Other people I know with the B/B's grenade the 700R4's.

Thanks for the replys. Have a great Cruising season.
