I'm restoring a 67 Camaro with a stock Saginaw 4 speed. Is there a 5 speed transmission available that will work with the factory console?

Closest you'll find is the Richmond 5 speed. This is not an overdrive tranny. Has a very low first gear with a 1;1 fifth. Run with a tall, 2,73 rear end or even a 2.56. Very close to same dimensions as the Sag/Muncie series. Other five speeds are 2 inches longer or more and have center mounted internal rail shifters. Deep pockets? Look into a RichmontdGear 6 speed. Tough, overdrive, near bolt in swap, expensive. tom

Tom is right, that Richmond 6 speed will set you back $3,000. Wow! If you have that kind of money it is the way to go. Remember you still need a clutch and flywheel and maybe more depending on what you have now. I have undertaken swapping a T-56 from a late model Camaro and expect to spend a little over $3,200 for the complete swap. All new parts except the used tranny. This tranny is strong, rated at 450 ft/lbs of torque. I have been told near stock apprearance was achieved by slightly altering the shifter (dog bone extention to move shifter forward 2") and moving the console back about 2".

I agree with Joseph, the T-56 is the way to go. If you have really, really deep pockets the only other 5 or 6-speed that outshines the T-56 is the Richmond, and only because of its' closer 1-2 and 2-3 gear change (38% vs 35% on 1-2, 34% vs 26% 2-3, T-56 vs Richmond).

I installed a Richmond Street 5-speed in my '69. Works great but forget the console! The shifter comes out the side of the tunnel and I had to graft a small hump around it to cover it. The stock carpet goes over it fine but the console is a lost cause.

I've installed a retro-fit T56 into my '67. This works with pre '87 engines & allows you to keep your stock bell housing & clutch setup - saving time & $. The console apears stock. Price is around $2300. Worth every cent!!!

If you don't go with the T-56 don't just go with the Richmond 5speed. Check out the Tremec. With their shifter adapter you don't have to touch the console
