I have been posting prices and basicly advertising while trying to help people with their rear end questions. I have tried to keed from advertising too much so as not to step out of line. Up to this point no one has said anything to discourage me from doing this, and infact, most of you seem to have no problem with it. I have had some people from the Chevelle site send me e-mails because they saw a post on Team Camaro, so I thought I'd try hanging around at Team Chevelle some. They didn't like the way I did things and asked me to stop, so I did. I know that if many people started doing this it could cause problems. If anybody (especially moderators) has any objections to the way I've been doing this, please let me know. I'll keep answering questions, but stop advertising.

Big Gear Head,
As far as I am concerned, I think you have to look at it from the perspective of how much a person contributes to the other members on this board. I have no problem whatsoever if you throw a plug in for yourself especially since you contibute so much valuble information. The same thing would go for people like Bruce (WE4) over at Performance Transmissions, Larry (LNJSTREETRODS) etc. (there are others as well but I have not dealt with them personally). We NEED the benefit of you guys in the business. Now I WOULD have a problem with a NEWBIE hitting this board with constant advertising BEFORE he establishes himself as a knowledgable person willing to share his info. You and others like Bruce and Larry IMO have earned the right to occasionally "advertise" as they say. I am more than willing to listen to the commercial if the content of your message is helpful and thus far it has been. It also helps that I know for a fact from personal experience that both Larry's and Bruce's word is good as gold. Now ask me how I really feel!!!! Freddie,
I think it is just sort of good manners. I have been a Team Chevelle and Camaro moderator for a couple of years and have well over 1000 posts but I really try not to gain business with direct posts on the forums. I just dont think it is the right way to do it. I also do not think it is fair to Al, who pays for these sites out of his pocket. If you do gears for a business, put your business name in your signature. If someone wants to contact you they will. Every once in a while I will e-mail someone, but only after I have tried my best to get him to use a vendor local to him. These are just my opinions, you have to do what you think is ok. ------------------ Bill Koustenis Owner Advanced Automotive Machine Waldorf Md 1971 Chevelle "Heavy Chevy" original owner 1973 Z-28 ..one family car...Brother bought it new in 73 |

Freddie, I for one do not have any issues with you posting prices and trying to drum up business as long as it is low key. Which you have been. We are in a Capitalist country, so shopping around for the best price is who we are
Putting the occasional price quote into your invaluable advice, makes it that much easier for everyone to compare prices. On a related subject, I was quoted $190 for strange gears, $375 for Auburn posi, $100 for parts and $200 for setup at a local shop for my 8.2. He is not a fanatic about buying the parts from him, so he will install if I buy elsewhere. Question is, with your prices being lower then that, but what about shipping? Gears and posi's are heavy. Have you a ballpark prices for shipping all the parts to NJ? Thanks, Kevin ------------------ 69' SS-350 Convert, M20, 3.55 posi. I should add that my real intention here is to andwer questions and try to help. I really enjoy the conversations and feel a great deal of satisfaction when I'm able to help someone. I saw a oppertunity to sell a few things and took advantage of it. I didn't ask permission, but no one said I couldn't. That is why I'm asking now. I do not want to offend anyone by my actions and will gladly stop putting in the plugs.

I'm inclined to agree with Bill on this one. I know Al intended the forums to be free of wanted ads and for sale items. He has gone to a lot of trouble to set up special areas for both. ( www.camaros.net/ads ) I also know that there really isn't a guideline posted anywhere that states not to post items for sale. That and the fact that there has been a good deal of harmony here lately I have kinda gone with the flow and over look quite alot.
What I would suggest is use the forums for organizing a group purchase if you like and if you have something to sell an individual send them an e-mail after replying to the technical part of the question. If their e-mail isn't listed request they send you one... The signature thing is a good idea also!! ------------------ ...Dennis '69 RS Convertible w/SS trim '96 Z28SS #1679 of 2410 "The Club" |

I saw the complaints on the Chevelle site. big gear head didn't seem to be trying to drum up business but was just trying to give an an honest answer to a question of labor and part prices. I would rather have someone give an honest price than take my chances with a crook when I didn't know what a reasonable price was.

I've always considered big gear head's price quoting as a matter of information. Maybe it's because I'm in the market for a new rear setup and that causes me to take notice and appreciate this info. I can't recall him advertising prices unless he was asked to do so. It's just like his other current thread about the Eaton 8.2 posi, the price was an important part of the announcement. Just my .02.

I agree with Robert on both points because as y'all know I'm tossing rearend ideas around also. I never considered how Freddie presents the information he so graciously provides us with as advertisement. When he is asked for quotes, I seem to remember him always asking for the person to email him.

Thank you all for your comments. I think to avoid any problems I'll use the e-mail to do business and only list prices if someone directly asks for it. How would you suggest I list my business in my signature? http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum12/HTML/000292.html How's this?

I too appeciate your guidance! I never saw it as advertising; only giving the costs of repairs/improvements. After all, that's what we really want to know.

BGH, I'm confused...your profile says that your an aircraft welder...do you also run a rear end shop? I guess what I am getting at is are you set up to take credit card orders? If you would, shoot me an e-mail with a phone number/hours of business so I can get ahold of you...I'm ready to order that eaton posi and installation kit (not 100% sure on what gears I want to use yet though).
Because of the fact that you are an established member on here and have experience in an area that so few of us have, i have no problem with a little plug here and there. And besides, the plugs I have seen were very unobtrusive. What I have a problem with (like stated earlier) is when someone new comes in either trying to pawn off a load of stuff or trying to immediately convince everyone that he (or she) is "the man" on whatever subject is at hand. By the way, you might want to elaborate on that proposed signature above ![]() ------------------ 375hp 78 Chevy truck 77 Chevy Nova 95 Chevy Lumina 3.4L and building a 78 Nova |

Thanks again for all the support. I have been trying not to be too obvious about selling parts, but I just don't think it's the right thing to do now. Tom, if you are keeping up with this, do you think a signature like this one would be all right on the Chevelle sight? Any sugestions?
Travis, The rear end shop is my second job, but the one I love. My job at GE is now a heat treat and coating furnace operator. I gave up the welding for now. You should see some of the coatings we put on the turbine airfoils for jet engines. Jet Hot has NOTHING on this stuff. Do you think my signature could be taken the wrong way? ------------------ '69 RS/SS396 pro street 427/4spd/9" Byars Performance Building High Performance Rear Ends [This message has been edited by big gear head (edited 06-28-2001).] |
