Question

I'm looking for a posi-trac rearend to replace the one I have in my 67 Camaro. What kind of gears should I use for a street car. The motor is 350/330hp. I don't want to race it, but would like it to be quick. I'm afraid to buy any parts used, so what can I expect to pay for one? Does anyone know where I can find it?

3.0-3.5 gears would work well for a daily driver. They are a good compromise between performance and gas mileage. Figure $750 if you need to purchase a posi unit, gears labor, seals and bearings, using your existing axles.

Actually if your not doing any racing, street racing included, you don't really NEED posi.If you do look for one already set up,with the ratio you want,it's alot cheaper, and easier to find, non-posi units. At least around here.
I like 3.42-3.55 for a good all around ratio.

The reason I'm looking for a posi-trac is I encounter wheel hop when I start off.

The wheel hop you're encountering is due to the rear leaf springs loading and unloading. I'll briefly explain what happens. When enough power is xfered to the rear axle and there is sufficient traction, the pinion gear tries to climb the ring gear. This climbing action is absorbed by the leaf springs, by bending until the amount of tension is greater than the amount of traction. When the tires start to spin, the leaf springs will unload. Now the traction is greater than the leaf tension and the process starts all over again. This loading and unloading process of the leaf springs happens in fractions of seconds. This process also makes the axle "hop". By going with a posi rear axle, you will compound this action where as going with an open unit will actually lessen the hop.
When GM started putting big blocks in the 67 camaro's, wheel hop was a major problem and they actually initiated a recall to install a small round traction bar on the right side. This helped, but in 68 they came out with multi leaf springs, staggered shocks and a square traction bar that was stronger.
Just an inexpensive set of slapper bars will eliminate the wheel hop you're encountering. My .02 worth? Go with an Eaton posi unit. To pick a gear ratio, you'll also need to factor in your tire diameter, trans. type & gear ratio's. Post that info and we'll see what we can come up with.

cardude is exactly right....

I never had wheel hop with my 3.07 open...but now I have a 3.31 posi and it chatters badly on hard launches. Like the damn easter bunny...hop-hop-hopin along.

I had a ton of wheel hop with my 67 327/275hp with four speed.
68 and 69 had staggered shocks and multi leaf springs to fix wheel hop.
On a 67 you either have to stiffen the front half of the spring.
or replace the rear springs with multi leaf.
There are traction bars called Cal Tracs or something. They have a link that comes off the spring plate and goes forward. I think these work well.

Thumbs up

David, I do have the caltracs and they work great. One problem is the cost. They will make the average person run away in fear. It's a great kit and well built. I also liked the adjustability of these units.

Doug I'm looking for a new rear-end for my 67 camaro, How much are you asking for your 10 and 12 bolts, and what do they have in them?
