Cool

well, first i wanted to thank you guys for your help with my powerglide question. almost everyone told me to convert to a 4sp manual. i would love to do that, that is a great idea, but what is involved in turning a automatic car into a manual? i would love to do this so again, any help would be appreciated. and also my car is completely original, so would i have to do anything irreversable? well i guess it really doesnt matter cause i'm never going to sell it. i just want to have fun driving it, and i know a 4sp will definitely be fun.

well you'll need to get the z-bar, mounting bracket, clutch ball(for the engine). you know, to make it easier, classic industries or other camaro vendors, sell a kit that will include all the items you need, for the linkage. the holes you'll need are already there for you on the frame and in the firewall. you'll need a clutch and brake peddle assembly, clutch fork, bell housing, tranny crossmember ?, cut a hole in the tranny tunnel, shifter, boot, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, you'll need to make a connection with the wires going to the neutral safety switch. you'll need to hook up a back up light switch. actually it sounds like a lot of work, but it is actually not that hard. one other thing, i'm not sure if you can use the same yoke. you may have to get one of them also.
good luck with your project.

Don't need a new x-member. All small blocks used the same one.

I was also considering swaping in a 4 speed untill I dicovered that all the parts that I would need would cost me over $1300. So if you decide to do the swap remember that it will be a big investment!

I will be starting a PG to Muncie swap in my '68 ragtop in a couple of weeks. Bought a muncie on ebey for $380, hope it's good. It'll be here in a few days. I sent a really long email to Russell, mostly to detail the entire procedure for myself, helped a lot to write it down. If you guys want me to post it, I will, but it's way long.

Anyway, there are a few answers I don't know, and would like to before I start:

THINGS I’M NOT SURE ABOUT:
2 diff. Bellhousings, for 11 and 10’4” clutches. (I’ve found, but not yet bought, a part # 3899261, said to be an 11” bellhousing.)
2 diff. Flywheels, 153 tooth for 10.4” clutch, 168 tooth for 11” clutch.
2 different starters, one with the bolt hole in a straight line, one with the bolt holes staggered about an inch.

ANY INFO ON THE ABOVE ITEMS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. MY CAR IS A ’68, WITH IT’S ORIGINAL EE CODE 327-275 AND PG TRANS. I haven’t looked at the starter yet, but I would guess the starter bolts are in a straight line, and that is the only starter the block will accept. Is this true? Does it mean that I must use a 10.4” clutch, flywheel, and bellhousing?

Thanks in advance for your help, guys.

BTW - I have an extra flywheel - it's a 168 tooth 350 type. I had to get a new one when I swapped in my new 400 SB. I haven't advertised it because it's so heavy I figured the shipping cost would be high. But, If someone needs one maybe we can work something out. E-mail me if you're interested.

JimM,

I think 2 bolt holes means you must use a 10.4 inch clutch and a 153 tooth flywheel.

Many small blocks have 3 bolt holes so they can accept either starter. Don't worry about the smaller clutch, the 10.4 was standard on Z-28s. If you built a strong engine, get a Centerforce clutch.

Thnks, guys. If I'm understanding, the 153 tooth flywheel, 10.4 clutch, and starter with the bolt holes lined up must go together, with the correct bellhousing?

So I have to drop the starter and see if the other hole is there in the block to know what exactly I need? And if I have all 3 holes, but my current starter bolts line up, then to use an 11" clutch I have to change the starter?

Rockymtn, I'll let you know about the flywheel, once i crawl under and look. Thanks. Jim

I don't know the system for starter holes, starters, and flywheel/clutch sizes. But I can tell you I had the larger flywheel/clutch with a starter with the straight across bolt pattern - first on my 327 and now on my 400. I did have to drill the second straight across hole on the 400 but I understand that some of the 400's came already drilled.

Also, my mini hi-torque starter has 2 sets of straight across holes. You move it one way for the smaller flywheel and the other way for the larger.

As with Rocky, I have a mini starter. You may be able to solve the problem by getting one. That way, you can buy the bellhousing you already found.
