The 383 is in and runs like a champ. The only question I have is that the distributor has had the vaccuum advance taken off. How does this affect the running and adjustment of timing? It has an ACCEL super coil and a curve kit. The spot where the vaccuum assembly was on the dist has been completely removed with no way to reinstall. The car is a daily driver. What should I do about this?

How does it drive around town? Does it respond ok off the line in traffic? If so and if it's curved so you get enough inital so it doesn't get hot sitting at long lights or in traffic and your not pulling more than 34-36 total advance, don't worry about it.

The idea behind vacuum advance in a street performance motor is to assist slow start and traffic driveability. From the factory it was an aid in meeting smog requirements as well.

At this time, the motor seems to be driving well. I just drove it home today after getting the 383 put in, so I won't be pushing it hard for a few more miles. I want to make sure the performance will be there along with any benefits of extra gas mileage if the vacuum advance affects this.

Does the timing hold steady? If they removed the vacuum advance so that it can't be re-instaled, did they lock the pick up coil so it cannot rotate in the housing? If they didn't you may have a problem with the timing changing while you drive.

I will check on the pick up coil. Do the vacuum advance units in Jeg's catalog replace what's missing on my distributor?

Vacuum advance (with manifold vacuum, not "ported" vacuum) will let it idle smoother, run cooler at idle, improve off-idle transition, and improve fuel economy. Unless someone butchered the distributor, a replacement advance diaphragm should bolt right in (you have to pull the distributor and disassemble it to install the advance unit, as it goes underneath the breaker plate).

Thanks for the advice. It seems the best that could happen is to have it accidentally be right based on what was set for the previous engine it was on. I think I'll just put it back the way it should have been.
