The blinker question also reminded me of a problem I am yet to solve. When I switch on the Hazards, the 2 front parking lights flash as normal...but the tail lights do NOTHING! Nada. Zilch!

All the lights work properly at all other times....turn signals, parking lights, etc.

Ideas?

On my '69, there is a junction on the drivers side in the trunk.
My problem was one of the pins in the connector was loose from the harness; reconnected and everything OK.

I have already had the back light harness out of the car. Connector pins and wires all looked good and I have positive conductivity.....any other ideas?

I am thinking maybe the flasher or switch?

I would guess the hazard switch is bad. When this switch is on, three outputs, two to each front turn signal filaments and one to each brake/turn signal filaments are tied together and supplied by voltage from the hazard flasher. The 14 ga white wire coming out of the t/s switch is probably dead with the hazard switch on.

I think it's fairly easy to get at the hazard swith inside the t/s switch for a good contact cleaning. Otherwise it's time for a whole new turn signal switch.

Well...pulled the hazard switch out tonight and cleaned up the contacts and lubed it with some dielectric grease.

Same problem still...front parking lights flash but the tail lights do nothing.

Any other ideas?

Check that white 14 ga wire. It comes out of the hazard switch and goes to the end position on the long connector on the steering column. It then branches off the same terminal and goes back to the t/s switch. From the t/s switch it changes to a yellow and dark green wire. The yellow wire goes to your left brake light and t/s filament and the green goes to the right. If they're dead, which is what I suspect, it's got to be in the t/s switch or the hazard switch. But, if the blinkers and the brake lights work, it can't be in the t/s switch cause those same wires are used for those functions. Those wires will go hot when those functions are activated. Let us know what you come up with.

PS: Is this problem on your 69 or the 95? Every thing I have described is for a 69 model.

This is on my '69. The turn signals work fine (both front and rear lights flash normally). I will take a look at the wires you mentioned tomorrow night...

Try using a test light at various points to isolate where you do or do not have voltage. If you hook the test light to the junction block it will act as the rear flashers, if it does flash at this location then you have a problem from the junction block to the tail lights. If it does not flash the problem is toward the switch and I would do continuity tests on the wires.

Well...I followed your suggestions and found that the white wire was dead. If I push the hazard button forward...bam!...it works.

So...time to take the column apart again to replace the switch...

Its a 1966 Oldsmobile F-85. My wifes great aunt bought the car new in 1965..and its unrestored...
