To all you numbers guys, can anybody tell me the approximate amount of 69 Pace Cars built at the LA plant?

I wouldn't guess that anyone knows that number....but I can tell you that I have only come across 14 LA pacers in 2.5 years of looking for LA cars.

I also know of another one under restoration.

I really am trying to make sense of some of the information on this site re: Pace Cars.

I may be wrong here,but,I have always been under the impression that the...letter and 3 numbers...on the cowl tag were of no real significance, and were merely a factory assembly line requirement for the pace cars.

An earlier posting suggested that a car with an O3C date and P411 cowl number was the 411th car produced during the P build period. That period was approximately April 26th.What does the P represent?

My car has an O4D date and P117! What can we make of this?

In Ray Miller's, Camaro Chevy's Classy Chassis book, you will see a picture
of an LA Pacer with O3C P371 id. This would line up with the other car as previously mentioned.

I don't think Chevy kept seperate records by plants. There were a total of 3,675 pace car replicas built. I believe the the lack of the Z11 stamping makes them harder to verify especially if they have been changed over the years.

I don't think Chevy kept records from both plants either. But, it is well documented that the replicas were produced at Van Nuys as well as Norwood, and part of their recognition I believe was the "letter and 3 numbers" on the tag. Yes, the lack of Z11 on the tag does make it harder to verify these cars. Nonetheless, they are still the real thing.
I have seen a window sticker from an LA car and on the options list it had Z11!!

I don't belive the PXXX is unique to pace cars. I thought all LA built 69's had that sort of number on their cowl tags... There are a coupld of members in our club with LA built 69 pacers, one is a 350hp 396...

It is great to receive another opinion on this. Looking at other tags and dates,it is all a bit inconsistent. For a very small number of cars wouldn't it be nice to have the right info, so all the confusion could go away.
Still, it keeps for interesting reading and discussion.

First of all, the P period designates a production run period of time. The coding steps through in a logical sequence....for example....

VIN Code
L503401 A045
L503456 A347
L503460 A634
L504526 B412
L505476 C032

As you can see, the Pxxx code is not specific for pacecars... many pacers seem to have a P code due to the fact that they were all built in the same timeframe (the P period).

I have LA pacers in the registry with C, I, J, L, P, Q, and S codes.

I would be interested in getting the rest of the #'s off your car, and the other LA cars, so that I can add them to the 1969 LA Camaro Registry. There is more info and a list of cars already added on my site....

I have a Van Nuys built Pace Car and the numbers are as follows: Vin# 124679L527937, Engine # TO313HA Trim#s 12467VN312171 O3D with a S480 code in right corner. At the bottom of the build sheet is reads Z11 AA 5787 KJ 5720 BA (its very light) Any Ideas?

Hey Jim....

I actually already have your car in the database. All the codes match up to the surrounding production.

Not sure what the codes on the Build sheet denote... besides the Z11 .
