Although I run a 3rd gen with 700r4, I am sure there are some of you who have bought some model of the console Mega shifter for your cars

My problem is that the shifter will ratchet up to neutral from 1,2,D,OD, as its supposed to do? I think

but you cannot lift the safety pin (I call it that) up to lift over the "safety gate" to go to reverse or park WITHOUT ratcheting going back to OD first !

In other words I have to be in OD to be able to pull up on the safety gate lever - you just can't move it period in neutral!!!!!!

Its very irritating to operate it -

Is this your experience ?? or should I be calling B&M

I had one of their Quicksilver shifters and it was the same way; had to be in drive/OD to lift it to go to park.

That is the normal operation of the shifter.
