I'm confused. I looked at the post on putting an LT1 into a 69...I always thought the LT1 was the 350 used in 70 z/28s, but that thing doesn't even look like a small block. What is it? I have been out of the loop for awhile. Can someone please explain what LT1, LT4, LS1 (and any others that may be out there) means? I assume these aren't all based on the old SBC. Thanks

LT-1 > SBC used in Vettes and Z/28 (introduced in 1970 for the Z, not sure for the vette)

LT1 > moderm SBC found in 90's vettes and 4th gen Z28's through 1997. Also used in the modern impala but with iron heads (up to '96 I think)

LT4 > Upgrade of the LT1, again modern vette and Z28 (only 100 or so in the camaro in '97)

LS1 > Complete redesign of the SBC used in modern vettes and '98 - '02 Z28's

don't forget about the LS6, which isn't a big block anymore, but a higher performance version of the LS1 that is in all the Z06 corvettes out there.

Thanks for the replies. Do these engines have more performance potential than the original SBC, or were they designed mainly to reduce emissions? I can't imagine that there are as many aftermarket pieces available.

This is really not my area of expertise but I will try concerning the LT1 anyway. It is a great engine for hotrodding because there are a lot of aftermarket parts available for it. It does use the GM reverse cooling system so the water flow goes thru the heads first and the block second. I think this will allow you to push your compression a little higher and still use pump gas because of more efficient cooling of the heads. Some please correct me if I am wrong. I think that the LT1 is a great engine but I am biased as I have just spend megabucks having one built.

cheers and good luck on your project

sounds pretty right to me
LT1 92-97
LT4 96 vette (all manual 96s got one, rated @ 330hp), 97 f-body (approx 100 SS and fewer TA WS6), redesigned intake port (different intake, slightly different cam, no egr)
these are GEN2, reverse cooling, opti-spark distributor, cam driven water pump
GEN2 use a different block than standard SBC, but most internal parts will interchange (rotating assembly)

LS1 97-02, derivatives of 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 in trucks
LS6 redesigned intake ports and different intake manifold (manifold used on 01-02 f-bodies) LS6 only standard production in the Z06 vette (a few f-bods got em stuck in special but not factory)
these are GEN3 and are NOT 350s, they actually displace 346 and the LS1/6 are aluminum blocks
NO PARTS of a GEN3 interchange with any other smallblock

if you wanna talk aftermarket
let's talk
it's f@@@@ng huge! www.ls1tech.com www.lt1tech.com (I'm moderator fast here)

plenty of aftermarket tuners like MTI, Speed Inc., AMS, Lingenfelter, MMS, ARE, Nu-tek (built my 396 LT1 shortblock) to name a few
LS1/6 are capable of 427 cubes and up ($$$)

any other questions? lol

edit: the times in my sig for the '94 are the stock 350
thanks for posting this, I thought I new a lot about first gens, and have learned tons here, I just realized I do know a lot about 4th gens

Did the Vette thing for awhile. The info is correct about the engines. The performance potential is great. Might be more aftermarket stuff for them than early engine. The other thing is it is all new technology.

should we include the LT5 4cam 32valve ZR1 'vette engine? (run mid-11s by adding drag radials and simply degreeing in the stock cams)

Hey Bspears..

An interesting thing on the reverse flow, is that the LS1 does not use it. Mine has 10.5 to 1 compression.

In theory the reverse flow is good, but in practice, because the water is going in opposite direction then the air wants to go, its very hard to get a reverse system bled properly.

Are you using the pressurized recovery tank like a Impala or a Camaro non-pressurized?

there are bleeder valves in the stock f-body system, it is actually quite easy to get the air out of the system, granted you do leak a little coolant, but not much

the LS1 was designed with reverse cooling in mind, there are conversion kits available for them, proven hp gains

for what it's worth I've seen LT1's running compression in excess of 12:1 on pump gas, my 396 will come in @ 12.8:1 with stock chambered heads (shooting for 12.0-12.2 w/ AFR's), I know of one 383 LT1 that lived w/ ~12.8 compression on 93 octane for quite awhile, that is until the scat cast steel crank broke

Heretic,

I believe we are using a Camaro non pressurized recovery system. My engine is 10.5:1 as well. Should be OK with CA 91 octane pump gas.
