Need to know about the visual and external differances between Muncies and Saginaw trannys.I'm going to have a look at one thats for sale, and the fellow said he thinks it may be a Saginaw because it has a cast steel case. The only numbers he had were 338835, A24 and GM9 Thanks for any help, Frank

Cool

You are corect, Muncie is an alum case and tailshaft extension, as well as having the the reverse shift mechanism and idler in the tailshaft housing.

Saginaw is a cast iron case with cast iron tail housing, as well as having all three shifters in/on the side cover of the main case.

Hint: select a gear and turn the input shaft by hand to see if the speedo pinion turns.

Easy visual difference between muncie & sag 4 speed, Sag has all shifter shafts in side cover, muncie has 2 in side cover and 1 in extension (rear housing). Ratios for sags can be found here:

Ratios for muncies here:

Go to Hurst's website, click on Online Catalogs, then Transmission ID.

You'll be able to look at the visual differences of the tranny's.
