From my previous posts, you can see I am trying to replace the bearings on my '67 RS. Thanks to some of you, I have figured out I have a 1977 Nova 10 bolt open 3.08 ratio rear. The noise I am hearing tends me to believe my bearings might need replacing. I have some up and down movement on passenger side and small in-out play on both axles. I will go ahead and replace the bearings, but being I haven't done this before can anyone walk me through this process. Also how can I tell if I have a posi? As the previous owner said it was posi. The code stamped on the axle does say it to be open.

To replace the bearings ,you will have to remove the center cover remove the center carrier pin push the axles inward to remove the c-clips that retain the axles into the carrier assembly.Inspect the axles where they ride on the bearing.Usually when a bearing goes, the axles are worn and pitted there. If thats the case you will have to replace the axles also.A little play inward and outer is normal with a c-clip type axle set up,and also up and down if you grab the wheel. The axles will move, but not much.Snap On and others make axle bearing removal slide hammer type tools to make removing the bearings a snap. You can remove them with a long 1" bar with the carrier removed, driving them out from the oppesite side.Install is simple if you have a bearing driver. If not you can use the old bearing as a tool to drive the new ones in,but be carefull to check to make sure it does.nt bind when your getting the new bearing close to being into the pocket where it seats in.You can tell if its a posi by rotating one wheel and watching the opposide side, with the car in neutral lifted. The wheels should turn in the same dirrection and have resistance if something is holding the wheel on the other side you are turning. If the wheels turn opposite directions on a lift in park it.s an open rear.If the covers off you should see springs and or clutches if posi.

I'm not sure if you can still get them or not, but they used to make replacement outer wheel bearings that relocated the position that the rollers ran on the axle. We used many of these at the shop I helped at, we never had a problem.

Thanks, Harlan.

I have heard mix reviews on those. After I pulled the axles off I felt the area where the bearings ride on and there is a ridge there. Any idea what is good or bad? Also, how do I know if the bearings are bad? They felt ok just running them with my fingers, but what drove me to replacing them was the noise I was hearing. But not sure if that is what was causing the noise.

I've been having problems with e-mail lately. but finally got to view your picture. It's a limited slip,by the spring in the middle and the clutches, you can see in the housing.about the axles ,if there is a groove in them where the bearings ride the bearings and the axles are shot.I believe you can buy the axle saver bearings.they off set the rollers to clear the bad section of the axles, but I would advise against them.I have tried them. They are prone to leak. The seal is built into them. It's just a bandaid.

Guy - Call Rearend Specialities. I don't have the number handy but they are listed. They are located over by the SJ Airport...
