I need some help converting a ford 9" for my 67 Camaro RS. I know that i have to move my spring mounts inward, but what else would i need to do?

First you need to find a 9" that is the right width, 60 inches, and has the right pinion offset. The pinion is offset 1/2 inch from center on a Camaro rear end, which means it is 1 inch closer to the right side than the left. This is important because your drive shaft will not fit in the tunnel if it isn't right. You may have to get a 9" narrowed to fit your car because the ones that are made right for the Camaro are hard to find. You will have to check the pinion angle of your Camaro rear end and weld the spring mounts on the 9" so the angle will be the same. I guess you know that the bolt pattern on the 9" will be different and you may have to get new wheels to fit it.

overall width needs to be correct,as well as the spring perches being welded on,
you will need axles that have GM bolt paatern,unless you are willing to run Ford/Mopar bolt pattern rims.and the same for the brake drums,they will need to be redrilled to the GM bolt {Small} pattern
{gm has a large,and a small bolt pattern for rear wheel drive cars,e.g a 1973 Impala,full size B.O.P.,etc most chevy vans,1/2 ton p/u are all large bolt pattern,where Nova,Chevelle,Monte Carlo,Camaro,all used small,as well as older Impala's,[e.g 1967etc.]}

newer Nova's,such as 1973 or so have an 8.5 inch 10 bolt that is heavy duty,and they would bolt right into your car, do a search here,and you can find some more info.

I am in the process of putting together a 9 inch for my BigBlock '67. I bought a housing with Moser Engineering Axles,already setup for the
'67-69 Camaro's the brake drums were already redrilled to the small Gm bolt pattern; I just had to find a carrier/pumpkin locally,and have to get a new posi for that,
Lots more work than i had anticipated ,and a bit more $$
Check the local drag race swap meets etc,
The old Bronco rears are the correct size, pre '77,but the spring perches will need to be welded on for the Camaro style/location.

The 9" I have in my 67 is out of a 69 Mustang. It is about 2" narrower that the Camaro rear. I had to weld on new Ford style perches, get a new driveshaft made, it needed to be longer. I went with a 3.5" shaft. I don't have any tunnel to driveshaft clearance problems. I use Ford pattern wheels.

I got my 9" out of an old Bronco. Have not put it in the car yet, but I traded a set of #186 casting heads for it.

I got my 9" housing out of a 69-70 Cougar (I think? [img]graemlins/clonk.gif[/img] ). It's the correct width within 1/8" and the driveshaft fit fine. I used a Rockwell conversion U-joint to fit the 9" flange. I did have to remove/reweld the spring perches to fit my spring locations and get the pinion angle right. You'll have to fabricate a bracket to hold the rear flexible brake line. The GM e-brake cables fit right into the Ford rear drums (which are about twice as big as the original Camaro drums, bonus!)

If you want to buy Weld wheels, they make several different styles that are drilled for both the GM and Ford bolt patterns! This allows you to run four of the same wheels without having to replace or redrill the rear axles. I bought he new Draglight XP's. They look great and are available in sizes up to 18x10.

hey i got mine out of a 70 bronco also, right width within 1/8 inch also, when i had new bearings pressed on i also had guy drill my chevy 5 on 4-3/4 bolt pattern on the axles and used 7/16 studs also, the center hub was small enough for my wheel vintiques to fit over, this is one problem you may need to address so that the rim will sit evenly on the axle flange. i bought some adjustable leaf spring perches from detroit speed that i will use until i get the pinion angle perfect then weld them on, oh big gear head, how careful do i have do be when mig welding the perches on, should i stitch weld it rotating around to keep heat down also using a blow gun on the weld right after i stop on that one weld?? thanks for the help

I don't think you will have any problems welding the spring perches on. Just weld one perch on one side and go to the other side and weld one side. Switch from side to side and you shouldn't have any problems.

I recently did a rear axle swap. BIG GEAR HEAD gave me some GOOD advice. My application is a Dana 60 but the work involved will be the same(spring perch location and angle, pinion offset, overall axle width, etc etc). I had my axle housing narrowed, used new spring perches welded in the stock Camaro location, and went with all new Moser internals. My overall width is now 58"(2" narrower than stock), and use 3.5" backspace wheels that are 10" wide. A local machine shop redrilled my Dana brake drums for the Chevy bolt pattern(I suppose you could do the same with the Ford 9").

I got mine out of a Lincoln Versailles. It was within a 1/4" of the overall width. Welded Moroso spring perches and this unit has disc brakes. Which is why I bought it to begin with.

For anyone who may be interested, I am installing a Ford 9" rear end in my '68 coupe. The '75-'80 Granada rears are a direct bolt in! Spring perches are exact, stock u-joint from my '68 mate with the pinion yoke, e-brake cable fits right into the Ford backing plate. And to top that off you gain two inches of clearance in your wheel wells for bigger tires. Although these particular rear ends are becoming extremely difficult to come by, they CAN be found by doing an internet search. Just thought I'd pass this on.
