I've got a TH400 with a B&M Z-Gate shifter (which will be replaced with a Lokar unit). The tranny has about 2000 miles on it, shifts good, and also shifts at the right RPMS (so far, I think).

I have a problem, but I don't know if it's the shifter, or the tranny. When I put the shifter into D, nothing happens...in neutral. If I put it into 2nd, it's in gear. Or, if I go to 2nd then immediately into D, it's also in gear and everything seems OK. And I think, but not sure, that today I left it in D, left it there, and it got into gear about 10-15 seconds later. Again, I may have bumped the shifter or something, but I think that happend today.

So, for some reason, it needs to go into 2nd or 1st before I can shift to D and make it go into gear. Anybody got an idea what the problem could be?

Matt, check the cable adjustment first, sounds like a possibility. Take a peek too and be sure the shifter shaft and arm are not loose at/in the trans itself. I have seen that happen on 350's and 400's.

Not really. Follow Oldani's advice first and if that don't fix it post back for follow-ups.
