On my '68 with a Muncie transmission and Hurst Comp Plus shifter, the shifter binds, the tranny sometimes grinds (going into a gear), and pops out of gear sometimes (all of these things are intermittent). It mostly pops out of 3rd gear. A few times I have been stuck at a light for a cycle or two and have had to hit the shifter (bang on it pretty hard) from left to right to get it to release. I'm not sure if it's grinding because it's trying to go into two gears at once or what. The tranny was rebuilt by a friend of mine, and I've aligned the linkage and adjusted the shift stops. I've replaced the linkage bushings as well. The problem still exists.
Does it sound like the linkage, or do I need the shifter rebuilt? When I had the tranny out for the rebuild, it seemed to shift okay just sitting on the floor of my garage, but then again it is an intermittent problem. What else am I looking for? Thanks in advance.

I would adjust the clutch for 3/4 to 1 inch of free play at the top of the clutch stroke.
Next, I would shift the trans to neutral, unhook the shift rods, and insert a 1/4 alignment pin or drill bit through the shifter housing, shifter and the shift levers. Then, adjust the length of the shift rods to just slide into the linkage brackets on the trans. You may have to loosen the shifter stop bolts to allow movement. For final adjustment, select 3rd & 4th and adjust their stop bolt, screw in the bolt touch the shifter, then back out 1 turn and tighten locknut. If trans still pops ot of gear, then maybe that gear's synchronizer assembly needs replaced. I'm sure the blocker ring has been replaced, but, if the teeth on the slider are not of its original shape, then new brass synchro rings aren't going to help. At least in my opinion.
