Stenn

The neutral safety switch is the one on the shifter. The backup switch is the same thing FOR AUTOMATICS. On manuals, it was on the bottom of the column.

It's been discussed a few times recently:

Joe,
Yes I know but there are 2 switches on the shifter, and instead of buying a harness I plan on wiring it myself, my manual was a console gauge car and I can use my exsisting harnes but it has no provision for the the safty or back up, what I need to know is which switch is which?
I know the wires for the safty are are purple and I have strong the back ups too, but what I dont know is which switch is wich on the shifter.
Thanks,
Mike

Two on the shifter?

The Neutral switch is curved, about 2 inches long and has a white plastic prong hanging down that the shifter handle is connected to with a small bracket. It should be on the pass. side of the shifter on the inside.

I misunderstood what you were asking..... I'm gonna give this one more try.
I still question the two switches. I didn't know the auto shifter had or could accept 2 switches. I hadda wait till I got home to look at the schematics. In the manuals it only shows one switch and it does both.

The 2 Purples go on the two spades towards the front. The one's on top of each other.
The Lite Green is in the middle. Then the Pink.

The top Purple (12 gauge) runs straight to and thru the bulkhead connector on the firewall, then to the S post on the starter solenoid.
The bottom Purple (12 gauge) (purple\white with RPO) runs to the ignition switch. It shows them as being tied together at some point forward of the shifter.

The Lite Green (20 gauge) runs thru a connector in the middle of the bundle that runs to the trunk and all the way back to power the two backup light bulbs.

The Pink (20 gauge) runs straight to the Directional Signal Flasher under the dash. There will also be a 12 gauge Pink and a 14 gauge Purple on the flasher also.

Does that help any??

I wasnt specific either, it is one switch with 4 spade connectors on it. I'm going from a 4 speed to a auto and was planning on tying into the wires that used to go to the 4 speed neutral as they are purple too. How are you on underhood wiring? I'm at wits end on the use of three wires that I cant figure where they go. 2 reds and a orange. the orange is burned in two and has asbestus or some other heat wrap on it.
Thanks,
Mike
