I am ready to purchase an autogear M22. I have heard varying opinions on which version to buy. Its between the standard ratio, and the wide. I would like a few more opinions to hash over before I purchase. I have a Lingenfelter 383 with torque figures in the 520 ft/lbs, and hp figures in the 540 range. Not exact figures until I can get the combo together and on the chassis dyno, but in the ballpark. I have a 12 rear with posi 4.10s. I will be changing to a 3.73 or 3.55 in the future to be able to run down the highway a little better. I have been told the wide is the way to go. But some swear by the standard version. WHICH WAY SHOULD I GO? Your opinion is appreciated. This car will be 99% mustang street fighter, and could possibly go down the 1/4 mile just to see the ##S. thanks......

bowtie, I prefer the standard M22 "close" because it is a little bit stronger than the wide ratio and it does not have the big "drop" when you shift into 4th.

The regular M22 ratios (2.21 first gear) would be the way to go in my opinion. I just got through building an AutoGear M22 to go behind my 400sb. I have 3.42 rear gears and I don't have any problem pulling out or melting the tires. It will require a little more clutch slippage, but if your engine makes alot of low end torque, you shouldn't have a problem. If your engine won't be making alot of low end torque or you don't like the idea of slipping the clutch a little more during takeoff, you might want to consider the M20 ratios.

The 2.21 is the way to go with your torque. I have it with my 4.10's and it works very nicely.

I must be the odd one. With 3.55s a close ratio box is terrible even with a BB. Personally I don't even like the wide ratio first gear a ST-10 has much better gear spreads.
