I have a M-20 trans from a 68 GTO in my 67 Camaro it has the speedometer cable coming out just above where the linkage is on the drivers side, can I just swap the tail shaft case & gears for the speedometer to one on the Passenger side? Do they make one like that?

Yeah, you can do that. All that you need is the proper tail housing that has the speedometer drive on the passenger's side. Your existing speedometer gears should work fine in either tailhousing. When you are looking for a tailhousing, make sure that you get one for whatever spline output shaft that you have. It is probably a 27 spline, but it could be a 32 spline. You can go here www.gearzone.net to determine the casting number of the tailhousing that you need.

32 spline out- Tail housing casting number 3978764
One speedo drive gear available, measure from the back face of the output shaft to the face of the speedo drive gear 6.8125" or 6-13/16".

27 spline out- Tail housing casting number 3857584, two sizes of speedo drive gears small (1.76") and large (1.84"). In both cases Measure from back face of the output shaft to the gear is 6.188" or 6-3/16".

Just be sure you are using the correct size driven gear. The 1.84" or large drive gear uses the small diameter driven gear which measures approx. .785" in diameter.

If your set up now with a drivers side speedo, your speedo drive gear is pressed down closer to the front of the transmission and needs to be pulled back to the dimensions stated above.

For what it's worth I installed an M20 with the speedo drive on the left side. Stock speedo cable for the previouse turbo 350 was the correct length and bolted right up. It's a little tough to tightened up having to work around the linkage, but can be done. I also slightly bent one of the rods so that it didn't rub on the speedo cable.

Hey Spitfire, u beat me to it... yes, if you're converting from an automatic, and not overly concerned about originality, a non camaro trans is the way.. I did mine 2 years ago... original PG cable fit right into left side of muncie...
