Hi Guys, I have a 69 that had a/c at one time but has been removed.
My question is what (if any) cover will fit over the hole in my firewall. I called Ground Up and they did not seem to know if their part
# A L 304 would fit my aplication.Could it be that # is for a non a/c car only? The hole is about 5" wide by 8" tall.
I am going to get a Vintage Air system someday
(not soon).

get a box cover that was originally on a non a/c car, it should work. When i bought my camaro the ac was disconnected but the system was still intact so i took it all off and wnet and got a heater box cover from a non a/c camaro and it fit great

A non A/C duct (engine side) will not fit over an A/C cutout in the firewall. The A/C cutout is 8" tall and the non-A/C duct is only 6" high. Your going to end up with a 1" gap in the firewall on the top and bottom of the duct.

Search on the subject there are only a couple of things you can do. Weld up the hole and then recut the opening to about 12" wide by 5" tall and get all new interior ductwork, cut down your existing fiberglass suitcase if you have it and glass over the open end to make it stick out less from the firewall, keep you A/C system, or not have heat.

Converting A/c to non A/C by replacing the parts will cost you over $300 and will never work as well as a car originally equipped with a heater because there are parts of the body that a non A/C car has that an A/C car doesn't and vis-versa. Nothing in the two systems is the same except the defroster duct.

Well I guess I'm going to find out because I ordered one from Rick's First Gen. If it doesn't fit I'll just send it back.

sorry if i made an error, i didnt know what year your camaro was , i thought it said 89 Mine is an 85, my heat works fine, no probs, i didnt have to change any of the duct work, and it only cost me 85$, so i dont know about the older models but mines ok.

I don't know if you've read this thread or not, but there is some usefull inf oand some pics that might help.
The easiest way to cover the hole and keep functionality of everyhing except the a/c is to get an old evaporator core suitcase and plug the holes. I sawed mine off to make a little more room....see this thread.

I was going to suggest that (since the drivers side of the evap core housing is so hard to find) you maybe able to modify the new heater box, add some fiberglass and make it cover the hole, but as I'm typing this it seems like the heater core tubing comes out from a different place on a/c cars than it does on non-a/c cars... I think.

On a/c cars, the top tube comes THRU the channel part of the suitcase... on non a/c cars, I think the tubing comes thru the firewall at a location that is several inches further to the right (if you are facing the firewall). Not an unsurmountable obstacle, but an obstacle none-the-less.

(I chopped mine down as a temporary fix until I can afford the vintage air, it was the cheapest and easiest way to go)

Now that is very nifty. wow, a solution to get my vent/heater back!! And I thought I would have to wait forever to afford the Vintage Air system to get air again. All I want is Vent, shoot I live in Southern California, I don't need heat/AC, I just need vent!!

Wow, that is a find!!!!!!! It does seem like a lot of money. I'll call Monday and see how much they want for it retail.
Mark C was correct, it was not even close with the other cover I ordered.
I did happen to make a cover very similar to the one Detroit speed is making but I never installed it.
