I thumbed thru my assembly manual and noticed the vacuum canister in the A/C section. I looked and found mine but it only has one vac hose hooked to it. The other stub is just hanging there bare.
Where does the Vac come from and go to with that canister? What effect would that missing vac line have on the engine performance? The manual didnt seem to offer any ideas to follow.

Jim, the vaccuum lost would be minimal, but the resivoirs function would be lost. It is supposed to hold vaccuum to provide a smoother and consistant operation for the vaccuum valves during low vaccuum situations. Looks closely at the assembly manual, the info is in there.

Thanks Kevin, I dug behind my PS booster and found a vac line coming from the cowl where it shares a grommet with the line that does exist and connect to the Vac Can. The extra vac line I found had a screw in it, so someone disabled it over time. I will hook it back up, maybe the canister is bad, will check that too.
I found the page showing the canister in the assembly manual, but it sure doesnt give any info. on it use. But then again, guessing the General didnt care to give out too much info.

Hey Jim,
Small hose goes thru firewall to the heat/AC control. Large hose goes to Vac source (mine went to the carb base on driver side and the other side of the "T" went to the valve cover). Got your email.
I'll be at the car show at Mills on Fri night of the 4th weekend but I'll be at BIR on Sunday so won't make the Blackbear Casino show. Won't have my Camaro done by the 4th but it is starting to look like a car again [img]smile.gif[/img] Maybe I'll bring the Chevelle to Mills.

I dont have air but I do have a grommet with 2 lines in the firewall and those go to the headlight switch for my hideaways. OR maybe you have two of these on your car?? I emailed you back about the car shows. Black Bear looks good for me.

THanks guys. I will trace those down soon. I have 2 of those double hole grommets in my firewall, one for headlight covers and one for this A/C canister lines.
Off to NAPA to buy some hose I guess.

Ok, now you've got me wondering... why does the a/c system need a vacuum? Is it just to open/close the flapper door in the firewall? I thought that was mechanical??

I've got the double hosed grommet also... if my a/c is being deleted, can I also delete this grommet?

Would the vac canister be advantageous to keep on hand for other vac accessories?

Kwik, Mark knows this stuff better than me thats for sure, but the vac is used to close the cowel damper when A/C is in 'recirculate' mode, to cool the car faster. In 'normal' that damper opens and the outside air is 'conditioned' by the system. On the passenger kick panel is another vac damper that open that side kick vent area for fresh air 'vent' type from the cowl area. When the A/C is turned on, that damper closes and forces the incoming air thru the A/C system to be cooled.
Hope that helps and I think I got it now. Mark correct my errors here, these systems are very difficult to follow with all the vents, vac, levers etc.
