Some time ago I read an in-depth posting from someone who's installed Sony Xplode speakers: 6x9's and 5x5's in the kick panels and I believe the door panels. I'm ready to install the same speakers and am not sure where to place them. I definitely want four speakers but do not want to put speakers in the trunk (can't hear them when the top is down).

Can anyone help?

rafab1,
Try a search in the Electrical & wiring section. We have gone back and forth with Convertible speaker placement.
I have a 69 Convertible and am still working on the rear speaker placement. I installed a pair of 5 1/4" speakers in the rear arm rests but they need too much depth and do not mount well.
The best rear instillation I have seen is in the Year One 69 pace car. http://www.yearone.com/enthusiast/ar.../69camaro.html

You can install 5 1/4" in the kick panels and the doors but for better sound imaging you may want to get the other set out of the doors and in the rear some how. It all depends on how good you want it to look and how much time you are willing to spend on it.

I am going to be fabricating some 5 1/4" speaker mounts to the convertible well area next. I think this is my last try before doing what they did to the Year One project car.
You can also see some pics of my stereo install by going to my web site in my sig.

I am going to use some speckers that are only about 1" diameter and mount them in the top of the wells, maybe even under the seat. they can be mounted in a few different ways but, anything other then hacking up the car interior is a plus, they say they handle up to 300 watts so I think that should be more then I need. I just ordered them so I'll let you know how they sound when I get them in....speedy

I am just going to run wires to the rear seat area and then put disconnects on them. I can hook up the speakers while driving and then disconnect them and put them away.

Cool

I put sony xplode 6x9's in the door panels because there was already holes from the previous owner. They do have a neat look . I also put the boston acoustic 4x6 plate speakers in the kick panels. They are very impressive little speakers. When I compared them side by side with the infiniti plate speakers, there really was no comparison. They blew the infiniti's away. I only wish I had looked for som boston acoustic 6 x 9's before I bought the sony's because I'm sure they would have beaten the Sony's. Anyway, I have an alpine cd player and you can definitely hear your music when going down the freeway with the top down. I have plans of getting a mild amplifier so I don't have to turn it up so much to hear it. The only drawback to the boston plates in the kickpanels was the factory speaker cover holes didn't line up so I will have to get some made.Good luck. hope it helps. Todd

I put Sony explode 5 1/4" in the kick panels. I put Infinity 6 1/2" rounds in the rear arm rests. I was recovering the arm rests anyways so I cut the top of the arm rests off and welded about a 1 inch piece of sheet metal in and then welded the tops back on. The arm rests sit a little higher now giving me enough room for the 6 1/2's. Unless you really knew what you were looking for, you could'nt tell that I extended them. John
