What was the original octane requirement for the 69 DZ302?

I remember(eat your hearts out youngsters!)that 92 octane was regular, the lowest you could buy at the pump.

My original manual says premium so I'm thinking it was 96 or 98 octane.

While kickin it with a buddy this weekend we could remember, as young kids, when you could buy 101 octane at the pump. It was $.42/gal.

Of course it was leaded gas, but that's what these cars were orginally designed for.

How many of you remember when there were two types of gas available, leaded and unleaded and that was the reason why the filler tubes were narrowed,.so you couldn't put leaded gas in a car designed for unleaded?

I remember.... and you're right about the octane numbers. They went south in the 70's.

I do remember the octane and gas prices. In 1969, when I got my driver's license I was paying $.33 a gallon for Sunoco 260. If I remember right the octane was 110. That's all I ran in my 63 Impala SS 4 speed, drop top. Damn I wish I still had that car. The next car I wish I still had was the 70 Nova SS, 350 4 Speed that I bought in 1973. That was a bad a-- car. Memory lane is a great place.

Before there was unleaded (no-lead) there was low-lead.
Also, wasn't most premium about 100 octane and Sunoco had a 103.

I bought my car from this kid that only owned the car for a couple of days because his dad woudn't allow him to keep it. I asked him if hardened seats had been installed so you didn't have to use leaded gasoline.... his response.... what's leaded gasoline?

Ethyl Ketone, she was sweet. Made my 302 MO shortblock w/fuelie heads and -140 cam run real smooth.

The days of Sunoco 260 at 23ct/gal were wonderful.

You guys make me feel old! I did buy sunoco 260 but I just dont remember the price. I do however remember the lowest price I paid for regular leaded during a gas war...$.14/gal. Before my first Chevelle, I had a VW. I could drive all week for a buck! How about the smell from those first catalytic converters when you pumped that leaded gas in there, even if the hole in the filler neck was too small!!WHEW! [img]graemlins/clonk.gif[/img] LOL Kevin

For a litle while (a few years) I had a little hard plastic adapter that slipped over the end of the gas pump nozzle that reduced it to the size of the unleaded gas filler neck. I used leaded until they stopped selling it at the pumps.

My wife understands my Z's octane needs, and got me this as a "garage-warming" present four years ago; unfortunately, she forgot the 8,000-gallon underground tank of 260 to go along with it

I solved the octane problem. I'm putting in at least 1/2 tank of 100 octane. Now, I can run the car at 4 deg. advance, like it should, and I won't have detonation.

Of course, it means I won't drive it as much, but that's a small price to pay compared to a hole in a piston.

I filled up today in Redwood City, about 30 miles away from where I live, and drove 35 m.p.h. all the way to home to save gas. I still have close to a full tank.

Oh, did I mention, $4.10/gallon!!!
