This is my first posting so I hope I entered into the right section. I have a 68 Z/28 that was turned into a racecar many years ago and has been through a few different people that used it as a racecar. With that being said the firewall had many holes in it from all of the various after market parts. I have welded up all of the holes that I know did'nt belong there except for one that would be approx. behind the distributor and it is about 3/4" dia.. Is this the hole for the factory oil line for the gauges. If not, does someone have a pic of where the oil line would go for factory gauges. Thanks

Welcome fellow Z 0wner! In 1969, the U17 oil gauge line does go through the firewall fairly close to the centerline of the car. The assembly manual shows this as a 0.50" hole( along with all of the other perforations). I am cautious about telling you any more 'cause I dont know about '68. I assume the '68 assembly manual will give you the same guidance- so if you dont have one...also Jerry MacNeish has a wonderfull book(s) on the first Gen Z-28's.

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm pretty sure that is the correct hole. I have one more question in reference to the speedometer cable hole. Is there only one way to route the cable or is there two seperate holes, one for automatics and another for manual? I have had a couple other 1st gen Camaros but they were race cars and I didn't worry about anything being correct, in fact I guess I've made my own fair share of holes in firewalls. Thanks

Cars with a Muncie 4 spd. used a different spedometer cable routing method that all the other others. Cable goes through the firewall near the throttle lever and runs back along the top of the trans tunnel.

Thanks for the reply. That is the larger hole that I was wondering about. Did they still cut the hole for the automatic cars? If so did they just plug it with a rubber or plastic grommet? Thanks again everyone, I'm that much closer to painting the firewall. Another question that I just remembered. I had the shell soda blasted which turned out excellent. It left imprints of grease pencil markings on the bare metal. It says RAG and 37. I couldn't figure out what it stood for. The car is a vinyl top car, so I guessed that the RAG may have refered to that. I'm totally lost on the 37 . Anyone have any ideas?

Here is some detail on Muncie speedometer cable routing for a 67:
