|
Have been trying to get doors to work right. have replaced the light switch, accutator cannisters, and hoses. Only get vavvum thru light switch when lights are turned off. Is this right? Can't seem to get the relay switch to work right. Can only get vaccum out of the lower port. Could the relay switch be bad? Have maximum of 15 lbs vaccum off the intake manifold. any information and suggestions appreciated!

Thanks for the help. Have eliminated everything but the relay valve. Cannot get doors to open when all hoses are in the right places. Cannot get vaccum to the green hose. The only thing that I can come up with is that the relay valve must be bad. Agree? The best that I can come up with is 15lbs of vaccum. Is this enough (when ideling)?

When you say "relay valve" do you mean the vacuum relay where the red and green originate and feed the actuators? I would check the door override switch on the top of it to see what position it's in. With the engine running can you overide the headlight switch and open the doors with it.
No vacuum on the green hoses would be an open door condition...

It makes no difference what position the override switch is in. doors just won't open. cannot get vaccum to the top (red) inlet of the relay switch. The relay switch is the only thing that I can figure is bad. Can change the red hose to the bottom inlet and the doors will open. When changed back to normal(red on top and green on bottom) they close again.

Rick, re-reading all the posts, I'm confused. Let's back up a step or two, do you have vacuum present on the orange striped hose that plugs into the top of the vacuum relay when the engine is running and the headlights are off?
If the answer is no the problem is in the headlight switch or you have a plugged hose coming from the manifold. If the answer is yes put the orange back on, then pull the yellow (middle of the 3) and check if you have vacuum there. If no then the problem is in the tank or the hoses going back to the manifold. If the answer is yes (this is the check to see if the vacuum relay is good or not) put the yellow back on, then pull the red and green hoses from the vacuum relay and check the ports (top and bottom of the 3) for vacuum. You want vacuum on the bottom and nothing on the top with the overide switch in the normal position (engine still running). Then when you operate the overide the condition will switch to vacuum on the top and nothing on the bottom. If this doesn't work the the vacuum relay is the problem. If it's good at this point, given what you've already told us I think the red and green are backwards on the actuators.

Sorry so late in getting back to you. I think that the problem is the relay switch. Am not able to get it to do anything but vaccum to the red(top) port. This is with the override switch in both positions. Just makes me mad that I bought the darn thing less than 6 months ago!

Am up against a brick wall! here is what I have right now. Have 14Lbs vaccum off intake mainfold. Have the approx. the same at the light switch when in the off position where hte line connects to the relay switch. . Have 12 lbs at the tank. before starting the motor I can open the doors manually and when the engine is started the doors will close. when I pull the light switch to on the vaccum at the relay switch stops but the doors do not open. Have no vaccum at the red port on the relay switch. have tried 2 relay switches and the same thing....nothing. have double checked the lines at the accutators, green in back and red in front and are on the right ports on the relay switch. any suggestions. am about ready to call it quits . Some one at the Camaro club here in KC thinks that there are some kits that change them over to electric. Know anything about these?

Where are you checking vacuum on the relay valve? Right at the valve, or down the vacuum line towards the canisters?
When I bought my repro hose kit years ago I couldn't get anything to work. The hose kit was the only thing I replaced, and the doors worked before. Turns out that the two "T" fittings that get installed right behind the left headlight door were not drilled all the way through. You could look straight thru the two ports across the top of the "T" but not up thru the vertical leg. I had to drill out that passage. If your measuring it right at the relay valve, try manually pushing up on the valve stem from below, You should be able to get a 1/4" ratchet extension up into the bottom of the valve. That will make sure the valve is free to move inside the body. |

You mentioned the local KC club. May want to try to get another set of hands and eyes on the project and see if a fresh mind might catch something you are missing ( no discredit to you intended). Our local club ( North Texas Camaro Club) always seems willing to lend a helping hand, so maybe someone in the Show Me state can help you find the trouble. Sounds like it almost has to be a problem with a plugged T or something like that. Good luck with it- Rob

Rick, What part of KC are you in? I live in KC and have a 69 RS/SS. Most of the time the headlights work but after it sits for awhile they need a little coaching (i.e. helping hand to get them started moving). Maybe I can help. Ted

live in the western part of KCK by the woodlands. Still think that I am getting bad Relay switches. The last 1 I got from Mustangs Plus. Took it back friday morning and they ordered another and should have Thur or Friday. The doors open ok Just can't get the darn Relay to work right. Can't beleive that I got 2 in a row that were bad.

Anybody ever get hassled for these doors not opening? Light gets through with the doors closed and I am just curious if the local police would bother you about it.

Not sure about everyone else. I retired from local Fire Dept after 30 years and know most of cops. Although it helps that I bought car from 1 of them! Think it's just the fact that is nice to have everything working.
