I talked to a guy today that claims he "stumbled" across a 1969 sYc. I seriously doubt his story But can any one tell me some easy to spot give aways to a yenko clone?? Or to identify a real sYc car?? We live in a pretty remote part of New Mexico camaro wise, so I'm kinda doubting him right now. I am going to look at the car tonight after work and I'd like to have a few ideas with what im looking for!! Thanks in advance for any help!!!

There are currently 3 lists out there of the various Yenko cars including the '69s. The basis for all three of them are the barely legible fuzzy copies of the handwritten YSC inventory sheets that have been around for years. That is likely why these 3 '69 Camaro lists do not match. The number of '69 Yenko Camaros is either 198 or 201 depending on who you talk to.

The list at www.rabbittstoys.com seems to be the least accurate. It only lists 153 VINs (excluding the 2 VINs shown twice) has one typo, isn't in numerical order and lists questionable VINs not on either of the other lists.

The list at www.yenko.net is better but only has 192 VINs factoring out the 2 listed twice. Again there are VINs on this list not on the others.

The best of the bunch is probably www.copo.com. It lists 201 VINs and has VINs not on the others but with an interesting twist-one of the VINs only on this list is here in town and is most certainly a Yenko Camaro. He has been compiling info for years and probably has more and better info than the others.

To further complicate the issue, with Yenkos knowledge and approval an Illinois Chevy dealer sold COPO Camaros striped and badged as Yenkos that were not directly acquired from Yenko Sportscars Inc. These cars are not on the YSC inventory sheets.

Watch for fakes, also known as clones or tribute cars. At Goodguys this weekend there was Rallye Green clone proudly displyed as the real thing.

Just my opinion, but there's a difference between a "fake" and a "clone" or "tribute car"

The difference is not in the way they look, but in the way they are perported.

The rally green you pointed out, appears to be a fake, not a clone.
Mine is a clone, not a fake.

Again, just my opinion.

Well, just as I suspected, I didn't get within 10 feet of the car before I knew he was full of crap!! I can't even begin to list all the things i saw that disproved his claim. So, anyways, just another standard camaro!! Thanks for the liks, they make for good reading anyway!!

Unreal, I don't have a problem with clone or tribute cars. As you said it is how the car is presented or represented. If you say it is a clone, then the prospective buyer knows what he is looking at and a viewer can look at and appreciate the effort placed into building a replica of Camaro muscle car history.

A rose by any other name is still a rose.

The problem with fakes/clones/tribute cars is they get sold. Within the last month an LS-6 convertible at a dealer with an ebay ad was exposed as a clone. The guy who built it sold it as a clone and had the paperwork to prove it. A few auctions later it was sold as the real thing. The dealer, who believed it to be legit, pulled the ad when they found out. Not the first time and won't be the last.

The owner of the fake Rallye green Yenko at Goodguys wrote "69 Yenko" on his info card. I did not speak with him but others who did said he claimed the car was genuine.

Caveat Emptor.

Yep, the hobby is definately become a "buyer beware" one. Anyone who buys a $200,000 car, like a Yenko or LS6 Convertible, (or a $1,000,000 one like a Hemi Cuda convertible)and doesn't do rock solid investigation, is setting himself up to get burned. He should either know what he's doing, or pay someone who does.

I suppose the same thing can happen with 18th century furniture. I happen to have a very nice reproduction Queen Anne dining room suite. I guess, for the protection of others, I should never sell it, because two or three sellers down the line, may represent it as real!

William if it wasn't for that so called least innacurate list the other 2 list would still be blank.Don't you think it would be more considerate to say check with each board to confirm your vin instead of whose better.Maybe I'm reading it the wrong way. There are yet still more numbers than all 3 websites have listed so to know why these websites listed differant numbers its because many people have pulled vins together to create them.So if a number doesn't jive with a number on another list it doesn't mean it isn't. I apologize for sounding harsh. It was not called for.

I was discussing the lists with someone recently and decided to compare them.

There are 153 VINs common to all three lists.

Rabbitts list has 177 VINs net.

The SYC list has 192 VINs net.

The COPO list has 201 VINs; no duplicates.

Shake out the 153 common VINs leaves 65 questionable VINs. Some of these are only on Rabbitts, some only on SYC, some only on COPO, some on two of the three. Whats up with that?

The most bothersome aspect to this is that Rabbitts and SYC are missing real cars that still exist and may include VINs that are not Yenkos. The owner of the Yenko in town was very concerned that his car was not on Rabbitts or SYC. There is no question it is real. How would you feel? In the pre-PC days lists were tough to maintain; even the original ZL1 list in Super Chevy had an error. Today there is no excuse. Simple errors call into question the integrity of the rest of the info.

Your assertion that the other lists would be blank if not for Rabbitts is ludicrous. Even I have copies of many of the Yenko inventory sheets as do others. I know people that have been reserching Yenko info for over 20 years.

If the VINs on these lists were based on reliable info the lists would match. Until the original documents are made available, and we all know who has them, the door is still open for real cars to be ignored and fakes to be passed off as real.

William nowhere on our list do we claim to have all the vins.We started to release vins and before you know it another site posted a pemiere list.At that point i didn't care where they came from lets get them out.I never thought that us not finishing our list was excluding cars.We never finished because the other site listed about everything we had.Your right it should be completed. Most people view all 6 sites and it never dawned on me to finish it I just figured Team Camaro ,Team Chevelle ,Copo Connection,Steves Nova Site and the other website got inendated with their info.Just because his vin is not on our list doesn't mean it doesn't exist. He has a computer he reads he could have emailed us and informed us.Maybe the other site and Rabbits don't have every single vin just because they don't it doesn't mean you should exclude anyones car. What did everyone do before they were released. As for being Ludicrous think not, there was noone intending on releasing any vins?Everyone had years to do it nobody did except for the found cars on Eds list.If you have more info than everyone else get with one of the websites and complete the list. You've been on our website and we ask if anyone wanted to expand on what we had why didn't you.Scotts door is open give him what he needs to complete what you think is missing. As for fakes I haven't seen one sell to anyone.Releasing the vins is going to quash that.I'd rather find 15 more cars and deal with a couple jokers trying to pass off bogus cars.As I said earlier now is your chance to get with Scott and he'll be glad to complete the lists.Tim

By your own admission your list isn't complete; at least one of the others isn't either. That leaves the door open for the owner of the Rallye green car at Goodguys to claim it is real which he does. Can anyone prove it isn't?

Last week in Illinois the proud new owner of an LA-built '69 Yenko with a green custom interior was quite suprised to hear it may not be real. But hey, the lists aren't complete...

As for me I'm happy to stay in the background since the COPO world seems to have enough experts.

I wish the guy who does know would speak up.

So I geuss I'll tell Scott you won't be contacting him to complete the inacurate list your so concerned about?I'm not here to be the SUPERCAR SAVIOR.You buy it without paperwork and getting someone to confirm it for you then you eat it.Enough of the I didn't know excuses from anyone who gets stung. Were all adults.Honestly I'm more concerned about the 1000's of people that are happy that the numbers have been released and they can hold them in their hand, than making sure every Yenko that has ever been built is on my list before ever being released.(I'd still be compiling)I concern myself with the 1000's of happy campers not the few who can't be satisfied.I'd much prefer they go to another campground so I can take my time to cook hotdogs and hamburgers with the happy ones.I can't save the world from unscrupulous people just try to inform the uninformed so it doesn't happen to them.JMO P.S. If the guy you are referring to that does know and his initials are V.E. he doesn't have all the info either.Noone I know does.
