KZ,
Don't feel bad at all brother! I just drove several hours away from home a few weekends ago to look at a GM cowl hood with "a 3-4 inch small dent on the raised cowl part"...I get there and there's about a 1/4 inch of bondo over a 1 foot by 3/4 foot section. He wanted 150 bucks for it, but It had rust on the underside and some rust where he had ground down through the bondo...I guess I'll get the repop. They say it fits pretty good usually and for a few hundred bucks and minimal body work....it's worth it! I'm not convinced that this one in the above auction is a GM hood from the sixties. Doesn't the add state "OEM" and not "NOS"? Maybe it's the real deal, hard to tell from the pic.IMHO.

How do you positively identify a true GM cowl hood?

Go to Body section and search for 'cowl hood' , there is a huge list of threads discussing it,
this one has a photo of my hood to visualize it.

A big thanks to Daytona Yellow 69 Z/28 for posting that picture on his web site. I had purchased a NOS GM cowl hood but was unsure if I got the real deal after the GM part number sticker popped off fairly easily. Now I can tell the difference. I DID get what I paid for!

The holes where the hood hinges attach each have 4 raised dimples around the threaded area on a real deal GM hood. The repros do not have these dimples. This is not visible with the hood installed. The notch at the rear of the hood IS visible so you can look for that. There are 2 small cups on the front underside that mate with the 2 jackscrew/bumpers on the radiator support. These cups were installed with 3 spot welds on the NOS GM hood but they used 4 spot welds on the repros that I have seen.

Hope this helps.

-Mark.

Saw it right after KZ posted it and thought nice but to far away. Had it been on the west coast it would have been on its way to Hawaii already.

KZ-

Thanks! I'm the one who snagged it. Just picked it up, GM sticker still on the underside of the hood. One small scratch in the e-coating, but other than that, it's pretty perfect. It'll be going on a BB Pace Car project I got recently.

Thanks for keeping a sharp eye out...if your ever in PA, stop in, I owe you a few.

My experience with the Repo cowl hoods is that they are about 1/4" too narrow. You can't pull the fenders in enough to get a proper gap. If you don't mind the Gap they are fine.
