I've got a 67 Camaro with an LS1. The engine harness is from Speartech. The rest of the wiring is stock and old. Has anyone replaced their wiring with something from Painless or American Autowire? Mainly I'm interested in what signals are passed through the firewall by the fuse box. I have a new RS headlight wiring harness from Rick's and it looks like it plugs into half of the fuse box at the firewall (under the hood). I assume the other half of the fuse box is for passing signals like the original coil, distributor, starter etc through the firewall??
Has anyone done this before?? |

The engine and front lighting harness attach to the fusebax at the firewall.
The engine harness includes wires for: Ignition coil starter blower motor (non a/c cars) oil pressure idiot light wipers (4 wires)

Thanks for the quick reply JimM! It sounds like a new underdash harness from Painless (or someone else) would suit my application somewhat. The starter and the wiper signals would get used I'm sure. The oil pressure idiot light might be used. I've read something about using an oil pressure sending unit from a '98 LS1 because it has two outputs: one for the computer, one for the guage. I'm not sure if the guage output is a simple warning light or a pressure reading. Come to think of it, my Speartech harness includes a pass-thru wire for guages. I'll probably use that one instead. Sure would be nice if someone had done this already.

they have, check ls1tech.com
As for the dash wiring, most of the painless stuff I've heard about is "one size fits all" kind of stuff, where you have to cut your wires to length and put your own terminals and connections on and stuff. They "fit" well if you're doing a total custom upgrade kinda thing because you get a new style fusebox and more circuits. If you're looking to just replace the stock dash harness with a new one because it's chopped up or whatever, and keep the oem fusebox, most of the guys use oem replacement harnesses from M&H or Factory fit.

I am currently installing a complete wiring harness kit from American Autowire in my '68 Camaro. It is custom made for the car, each wire is labeled, very complete schematic diagrams and descriptions. You could not build or buy a better kit than this. The engine side of the firewall does install in two halves, the front light harness is one side and the engine electrical is the other. It even comes with a new light switch, new starter switch, and a new dimmer switch. Also comes with all wires and connectores needed for a console and gauges. It is nice.
