Default What pump would you use?

Hi guys: I am just getting ready to complete the build on my 405 sbc. My question to you is what oil pump would you use with this combination , a Mellings high or standard volume pump and why? specs are :
405 cid smallblock
compcams xr294hydaroller
afr ported 195 heads
afr rev kit
10:5-1 comp.
srp 16 cc dish pistons
eagle rotating assem. balanced
hopefully shifting at 6200
milodon 30900 7 quart pan with tray

Your opinions make life easier when it comes to important motor decisions!

Sincerely Ken.

This is one of those long time myths or at least misunderstood areas. Standard volume pumps supply plenty of oil pressure/volume unless you have an external oil cooler and plumbing etc or real high tolerances changing the volume "footprint" of the oiling system. Then go with a upgrade. Using the high volume pumps on standard volume blocks just eats hp and unnecessary wear on the pump/cam gears.

Totally agree - go with standard and look for 10 psi per 1000 RPM at most. Been using a Melling standard pump on my 421 SBC for 4 years with no problems and getting a consistent 612 hp out of it. Crank scrapers are good for a few hp as well.

Look at the blueprinted Moroso STANDARD VOLUME pump.

You do not need a high volume pump.

Eric: are you referring to the #22100 pump and if so is it dimensionally the same as a melling standard volume pump? I want to use the milodon 30900 pan and suggested pickup for the melling pump #18311. What pan and pickup are you using?

Ken.
