Hello, have question someone hopefully can answer. Have one good 291 (2.02/1.6) head 1967 casting. Also have a 461 (2.02/1.6) head 1966 casting. Would there be any problems using these two different castings on my 327 engine? My engine has 30 over dish top pistons, I am using a comp cams extreme energy cam. about 448 lift. Also, on these heads can the presses in rocker studs be replaced, as I have a couple with some bad threads, or is it terribly pricey to have screw in rocker studs put in?
Thanks |

The 461 and 291 heads are pretty much identical except for the boss for the temp sender. The press-in studs can be replaced, but you'll need .003" oversize studs and the holes need to be reamed to accept them. Screw-in studs without the hex (no machining required other than tapping the holes) are available and inexpensive, or you can have the bosses machined to accept the conventional hex screw-in studs.

My father has one "461" and one "462" head on his 1968 327cu Camaro. The engine builder flowed them they came out very similiar so we decided to run them as a pair. The car runs great with absolutely no problems. Pulls well past 4000rpm too.

John, you sure about the heads being the same? The 461 is the early shallow chamber and the 291 is changed design that have a much better combustion chamber. It will run fine you really won't notice anything wrong.

Should be fine. I know of a factory 295/350 engine built with one 186 head and one 041 head, assembled Jan of 69. I also have some of each and never can tell a difference in the casting.
