Default Will the Camaro come back?

Saw this in Automotive News today:

"Mustang success motivates GM’s engineers, Mark Reuss says
The continued success of Ford’s red-hot Mustang is being noticed at General Motors. There has been talk reviving the Chevrolet Camaro as a competitor to Ford’s pony car. Mark Reuss, GM’s executive director of vehicle architecture and Performance Division, says his engineers are looking to develop a low-cost rear-wheel drive platform that makes good business sense."

First time I've seen someone from GM state they are considering bringing the Camaro back.

"Low cost, good business sense" don't expect too much.

There were artist's conception drawings in the latest Road & Track. But why do I get the feeling this topic is like....

argh- come on now....

I have started a savings fund just for when and if the "new camaro" makes its come back.

The camaros 40th anniversary will be in 2007. I should have a good down payment saved by then.

Is it only me that sees the IRONY in all this???

1965 mustang starts pony cars, GM takes a while to get off its arse and makes a 1967 Camaro.

fast>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>forward to 2005....

2005 Mustang is HOT, GM takes a while to get off its arse and makes a 2007 Camaro.

This is too weird. I know the dates are not exact, but close enough! Its like "back to the future part II"

In September's Motor Trend, page 22, they claim Dodge has approved the 2-door Challenger model, based on the next gen LX platform, called LY, due in 2010, 350 HP, HEMI V-8, and an SRT 425 HP model.....there's artist render of the car there too.

Ya, I was thinking of the irony, or history repeating itself again, 40 years later....

A couple of carefully choosen words by GM to scrutinize here. First "business-sense" and "low cost". I don't know that they have much of the first one and the second one will be such a driving force that we may not want to see the results. Look at the "Malibu". If that new car doesn't take you back to the days of the SS396 Chevelles what will? Why didn't they just name the Cobalt the Nova and keep the pride alive there too?

But then it is refreshing to see that GM engineers "noticed" anything their competition is doing these days. I think GM is in such serious trouble these days that a niche car like the Camaro really isn't driving their business decisions too much. They'd better start noticing the competition because they're getting their butts kicked by it right now.

I agree it's a dead horse.

I would hope that if GM does infact decide to start to reproduce the Camaro, that they would do it justice. Put the money and time into creating something with the caliber and classiness of the classic camaros, and i think that it will blow the doors off of the new camaro.

Just my opinion

I hope they bring it back, but who knows? There has been talk about that for a year or so now. I think GM is messed up. The quality of the cars has gone down. I don't know what market they are looking at? The Cobalt? What a pile! They need to make some cool stuff like Ford and Chrysler or they will be out of the game! Not everyone can afford the Vette. Why don't they make some cool stuff like the other guys and incorperate the old shcool into the new? They made the newer Z-L1 Camaro. But when do you see one of those!

I was going to post, then I wasn't going to post, then decided to go ahead and post.....This decision is so complex I think most of us are sick of talking about it. And when I say complex I mean it involves making money. Right now GM thinks it can make more money on it's truck/suv line than any other Chevy product it can roll out. So their going to stick to that for now. Guess it wasn't that complex. They just don't think they will make enough money to out way the cost of designing/producing one. It's sad to say, but Chevy is nothing more than a follower.

There has to have been at least a dozens threads exactly like this one in the past year, everybody says the same thing in all these threads. It has been hashed, re-hashed, and re-re-hashed here. (do a search you'll see). As has been said many times, most WILL NOT be happy with whatever they do or don't do. For me, I could care less whether a new Camaro comes out or not. If they do, I may or may not buy one, depending on what it is.
