Is this a stock setup? Was it working yesterday or did you just change the motor? Reason I ask is quite simple. I just swapped a regular 350 (carb)with some minor mods into an 86. Never paid any attention to TV cable as the last time I worked on any Chevies it was a 68 truck with a 327 and I installed a th350 with the regular kickdown. (also disk front end and newer rear in back too) So here I am going around the yard with this thing (Z) in first and it wont go to second. Had to start reading. Of course your problem seems different but if you have some extra information as to what you may have been working on, it would really help?

I mean if nothing was worked on, it would seem the trans just has some problems that need a transmission shop? I read, bought the adaptors and next step is lockup? Any idea what the last guy might have done?

Sounds like the 3-4 clutches are toast in the tranny. Is it a high mileage car. We just replaced the 3-4 clutches in my 4L60E that were on the verge of not working while replcing the rear main seal and resealing the tranny.

Yes it does have high miles 100,000 plus,no mods have been done to the engine, I bought the car with a hole inthe freeze plug got it fix and drove it around for a few miles and it tries to shift into third but won't, how much of a job is it to change those clutches? Thanks for the info

Don't know I let my buddy work on my drivers. However I will be helping him build a 700R4 for me shortly for one of my projects.

Yer talkin a rebuild. All the guts come out, get cleaned up, and all the rubber, clutches and worn parts replaced.

Go to your local Trans parts tore and buy an ATG manual for the specific model of trans. Inside, it will show you where to hook-up a pressure gauge, 0-200 PSI, to see if oil is being delivered to the each clutch pack for the gear selected.

If there is pressure applied and it is steady, then as dnult suggested, disassembly is in the future.
