HI All, Time for a new Rearend....the old 10 bolt finally gave out on me. Had a few questions.
Going to start searching for a 8.5 Inch 10 bolt as money for a 12 bolt is not in the budget. Had a few questions. 1)I realize they will drop right in if I find one from a 1972 or Later Nova...However are there any other cars/years these came in?? 2)Where are some good places to start looking? Never been on a Rearend hunt before (That sounds kinda funny) 3)Just in case I come across a 12bolt, what years and types of cars will be a bolt in for the 1968 Camaro... Thanks!! |

HI All Used the old Search button and found some good info....had one last question...When I hit the junk yards is there any way to tell if a 8.5 has posi from looking at it, moving the wheels..etc. Or is the only way to tell by opening it up??
Thanks |

depending on if the driveshaft is on or not... if you turn one wheel and the other turns in the same direction, itsa posi... not foolproof, possible for a posi to turn the opposite way if the driveshaft is on and locked, or if the clutches are shot.
on an open rear, the opposite wheel will always turn the wrong way. All GM posi's had a tag, I think attached to the fill hole plug, suggesting the use of posi additive. Last but least, there will be a 2 letter code on the front of the pass axle tube. If you have a really big book with, it'll tell you, or you post it here, and come back the next day if it'sa yes.

The chances of finding a 72-79 8.5” Nova or Nova clone (Apollo, Omega, Ventura, Skylark) rear end with posi are pretty slim. Don’t pass up a clean housing because it doesn’t have posi.

wait, 72-79 nova?
I thought it was 68-72 novas that had the rear end that would bolt right up to a 67 or 68 |

68 to 72 Nova would have the same rears (8.2 10-bolt and 12-bolt) as the 67-69 Camaros. The 8.5 came into use in late 72.
So, late 72 to 79 is correct, but you have to watch from 75 or 76 on, because they started using the weak 7.5 10-bolt too. Visually the 8.5 and 7.5 are different, so it's easy to avoid the 7.5. http://www.novaresource.org/axle.htm

That nova resource site is great. It is what I used to find my rear end (that did not sound right!). Any way mine is out of a 74 and bolted up with no problem. Got a carrier out of a mid 70's trans am and 3.42 gears ready to roll.
