I am assembling my 400sb and I am using Hastings moly rings for it. The instructions aren't very clear at all as to which compression ring goes in what groove. I have two rings, one has a bevel and a dot. I know the dot goes up, and I think that ring goes in the top groove, but I'm not for sure. The other ring has no bevels or markings of any kind. I looked at Hasting's web site, but I found nothing that helped. Do any of you guys know what ring goes where?

If you know that bevel and dot are top ring,, then no markings rings is # 2 gland. There should be some type of interal beval on that second . Both are compression and should be cast iron .

I believe that the ring with no markings goes on the top and the ring with the dot up and the bevel on the inside of the ring should be on the bottom is your second ring and is important to get the second ring where it belongs as its a tapered ring and is also called a scaper ring. Hope this is of some help to you.

Cam,
Are the rings still in the box ? Did you open the box correctly from the "zip lock" side ? If so the little end "flaps" tell you where each ring goes. If you already have them out of the box and they are the usual Hastings Moly rings.... the one with no bevel or markings and the shiny face goes on top and can go either way. The one with the bevel should have a dot on it too. This is the second ring and the dot goes towards the top of the piston. If you are not certain, wait until Monday and call Dawn at Hastings with the ring set part number and she will tell you for sure.

On the hastings rings the ring with the dot up, bevel down is the second ring, the ring with no markings or bevel is the top ring. Also the top ring is the one with the shiny face, the moly coating, the second ring will be a dull cast look just like the sides. I have installed about 200 sets of these rings over the years and i am very familiar with the placement of the rings

I never looked at the box, I took them all out before I did anyway that wouldn't have helped. I just assumed that the instructions would show me. I'm glad I asked because I thought that the beveled ring with the dot went in the top groove. I think that I will call Hastings tomorrow just to ease my mind though.
Thanks
