Did all SS's in 1967 have the 4P designation on the Cowl tag?

4P was the code for a small block SS. The 4P was also on the 327/275 4 speed cars later in production. The big block SS cars would have a 4N for the 396/325 and a 4K for the 396/375.

So, without those designations, depending on VIN someone could have just ordered a standard Camaro with a V8 and manual shift. If that is the case,
what engine would have come in a standard Camaro? 327? |

Yes, the standard V8 Camaro would have been a 327. SS's were either 350 or 396. Unless it was a Z28 of course, then 302.

Yes, 327 was the base engine for the US. In '67 all 350's were SS's.
A few export vehicles have been shown to have 283's as a base engine. There are some early SS350's without the 4P on the trim tag. I think it was vehicles built prior to Dec. '66. |

My Cowl tag reads as follows:
03D PS ST67-12437 LOS-26763 BODY 709-Z C-C PAINT W 2L 5Y VIN # 124377L147740 Was touted as a true SS. Have my doubts after being on website. But it does have disc brakes. I still love the car. Was never sold as a #'s car anyway Last edited by tz1238; Sep 20th, 05 at 07:08 AM. |

2 = Camaro 4 = 8-cylinder engine 37 = coupe body 7 = 1967 model year L = Los Angeles, CA assembly plant (Van Nuys) 147740 = vehicle serial number sequence Decode for body number: 026763 03D = Built the Fourth week of March. 67-12437 = Standard Interior Coupe. LOS = Built in Van Nuys California. 709 = Standard Gold Bucket Seats. Z = (A50) Strato Bucket Seats (without headrests). C-C = Car Color is Ermine White PS = internal plant scheduling code. Options: 1W = (A02) Tinted W/S only 2L = (M20) 4-speed floor shifter 5Y = (A39) Belts All Deluxe Does the absence of the 4P code mean this was a 2 barrel 327? Were there cars with the 4 barrel 327 with a 4 speed that did not receive the 4P code in the later months?

Actually, the car was advertised as a SS 350. Which I think is wrong. The car is running a 350 bored .030 over. The engine serial # by the head is painted over but it seems like the numbers that I can make out are 12WB?The car is also running a 10 bolt posi rearend. Again, the car was never sold as a #'s car. The guy that sold it to me went over the car completely, every nut and bolt has been changed. The car looks better than brand new. I'm just interested finding out what the car orginally had in it.

From the CRG website:
"Note: The 4P code was used from early production at Van Nuys, but was not added to the Norwood SS350 cars until sometime during October. Norwood SS350 cars built before October will not have the 4P code to verify that they are SS's." So, from either plant, an 03D car should have a 4P code if it is an SS350.

Well, at least it was a 8 cylinder car with a 4 speed from the factory. My next move is to figure out what year engine I've got in it. Block's been decked so I'll try to get the numbers off the back of the engine. Thank's for all the help.

My plain Jane 67 Camaro came with some weird options as well. Deluxe buckets with headrests, front disc brakes (no power though), manual steering, console shift 3-speed manual, trunk light, etc. It was also a 327 with 2bbl. They could be optioned a lot of ways back then that wouldn't make sense to us if we were ordering a new car today.
